Calvin Cornell Haas

Calvin Cornell Haas, born on January 27, 2010, infant son of Dr. Nathaniel & Jeanna Haas, passed away on Monday, April 19, 2010 at UW Hospital & Clinics, Madison, WI, due to complications following a recent heart surgery.  Calvin is survived by his parents, Nate & Jeanna, his sister Sophia, all of Spring Green, WI, his grandparents Gary & Chris Haas and Joe & Julie Budworth, both of Lancaster, WI, great grandparents Martha Wetter, Cuba City, WI, Maurice Landon and John & Marcella Budworth, all of Lancaster, WI, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.  He is joined in heaven by family members who preceded him, including his great grandparents Charlotte Landon, Robert Wetter, and Aloys and Bernadine Haas, as well as his uncle Jacob Haas. 

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 23, 2010, at St. Clement’s Catholic Church, Lancaster, WI, at 1:00 p.m. with Father William Seipp and Father William Nolan officiating.  Visitation was from 11:00AM until time of services at the church.  A luncheon followed in the church basement immediately following the service.  Burial will be held at a later date.  Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster is assisting the family.

Although Calvin’s stay with us was a brief 83 days, he touched the lives of so many, including his family and friends, along with the excellent nursing and physician staff who provided care for him at  American Family Children’s Hospital, Pediatric and Cardiac Department, in Madison, WI.  He will be especially missed by his adoring big sister who will forever feel his guiding presence.  In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in Calvin’s honor. 


 

Louis J. Haas

     Louis J. Haas, age 74, of Cassville, died on Saturday, March 28, 2009, at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, rural Lancaster.  He was born on November 12, 1934, in Cassville, the son of Arch and Rose (Reding) Haas.  Louis graduated from Cassville High School in 1952.  He entered the United States Army and served his country in Germany from 1957 until 1959.  Louis was in construction and helped build many United States Post Offices throughout the Midwest.  He was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church in Cassville and also enjoyed a good game of cards.

   Survivors include his brothers and sisters:  Norman (Patricia) Haas, Cassville; Francis Haas, Cassville; Monroe (Dorothy) Haas, Bloomington; Bernice (Stuart) Kelper, Amhurst; Helen Haas, Middleton; Ruth (David) Schreiner, Deerfield; sister-in-law, Ruth Haas, Cassville; many nieces and nephews.

        Louis was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Maurice and Laverne.

       Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Charles Catholic Church in Cassville with Father William Seipp officiating.  Burial with military honors was held in St. Charles Cemetery, Cassville.  Friends called on Monday, March 30, 2009, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Cassville and from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.


Norman C. Haas

Norman C. Haas, age 77, of Cassville, died on Thursday, February 17, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, IA, after a courageous battle with cancer.  He was born on May 13, 1933, in Cassville, the son of Arch and Rose (Reding) Haas.  Norm attended country school in Cassville and was employed at Kleinpell Lumber before entering the service and serving his country during the Cold War.  Following his honorable discharge, Norm was employed with Walz Lumber.  On November 12, 1958, he was united in marriage to Patricia Weidemann at St. Charles Catholic Church in Cassville.  Norm was later employed with Wisconsin Power and Light for thirty years, retiring in 1994.  He was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church in Cassville and was a lifetime member of the Catholic Knights.  Norm was very active in the Cassville Community.  He was a volunteer fireman for fifty years, served as fire chief for twelve years, and was the fire inspector for many years.  Norm also drove school bus for forty years without a scratch on the bus and participated Twin-O-Rama for thirty years.  He was caretaker and sexton for St. Charles Cemetery for over twenty years.  Norm was also a member of the Cassville Ski Busters snowmobile club and was an avid hunter.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Haas, Cassville; two children: Rod Haas, Minneapolis, MN; Sandy (Paul) Haverland, Cassville; three grandchildren:  Tera Haas, Woodbury, MN; Tricia and Todd Haverland, Cassville; his brothers and sisters: Francis Haas, Cassville; Monroe (Dorothy) Haas, Lancaster; Bernice (Stu) Kepler, Amherst Junction, WI; Helen Haas, Madison; Ruth (Dave) Schriener, Deerfield; his sister-in-law, Ruth Haas, Cassville; other relatives and many friends.

In addition to his parents, Norm was preceded in death by his brothers: Maurice, LaVerne and Louis Haas.

Funeral services were on Monday, February 21, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Charles Catholic Church in Cassville with Father John Meinholz officiating.  Burial with military honors was held in St. Charles Cemetery, Cassville.  Family and friends called on Sunday, February 20, 2011, from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the church where a 3:00 p.m. scripture service was held.  Friends also called on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the church.  Martin Funeral Home in Cassville is assisting the family.  In lieu of plants and flowers, the family suggests memorials be given to the Cassville Fire Department or the Cassville Rescue Squad.


Nancy C. Haberkorn

     Nancy C. Haberkorn, age 64, of Lancaster, passed away on Monday, December 1, 2008, at UW Hospital in Madison, following a brief illness, surrounded by her loved ones.  She was born on January 2, 1944, in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of William and Bernetta (McDermott) Munger.  Nancy was employed with Ray-O-Vac, Gasser True Value Hardware and the Loudspeaker Component Corporation throughout the years.  Nancy loved her family and their activities and will be dearly missed.  She enjoyed her pets, gardening, and watching the Green Bay Packers and Brett Farve.  Nancy especially enjoyed her trip to visit her brother, Mike, in Seattle, Washington.

       Survivors include her best friend and caregiver, Mary “Toby” Stoker, Lancaster; her children: Karen (Dennis) Potter, Lancaster; Lisa (Rich) McNett, Platteville; Steve (fiancé Pam Buss) Haberkorn, Cassville; Cindy Haberkorn, Lancaster; Bob (Connie) Haberkorn, Potosi; her brother: Mike (Mary) Munger, Eatonville, WA; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a god-daughter, Tonya (Matt) Mish, Bloomington; nieces and nephews; a dear friend, Norbert (Karen) Stoker, Platteville and former husband, Albert Haberkorn, FL.

       In addition to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Judy Haberkorn, two infant grandchildren, and a dear friend, Leona Stoker.

       Funeral services were held on Friday, December 5, 2008, at 8:00 p.m. at Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster.  Burial will be at a later date.  Friends called on Friday, December 5, 2008, from 3:00 p.m. until time of services at Schwartz Funeral Home.  A Nancy C. Haberkorn memorial fund has been established.

       The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Diane from Home Care Select and all the other doctors and nurses who cared for Nancy in the last few months.


Betty A. Haberlie

     Betty A. Haberlie, age 69, of Lancaster, Wisconsin died on November 17, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, after a brief illness. She was born on March 22, 1940, in Lancaster Wisconsin, the daughter of J. Stanley and Retha (Jack) Noble. On October 10, 1959, she married James Haberlie in Lancaster, Wisconsin.

     She was employed by Croft Shur-Save and then Dicks Supermarkets for over 3 decades before retiring in 2006. She recently has been involved in the Lancaster City Council and volunteered at the Thrift shop.

     Her interests included playing cards with the card club, going to plays, drinking Kessler, finding deals, enjoying campfires, spending time with her grandchildren and family and laughing a lot.  Her stories and humor will be missed by many. 

     She is survived by three children: Michael J. (special friend Donna O’Neil) Haberlie, Lancaster; Vickie L. (Kurt) Streicher, Bettendorf, Iowa; and Jo Ellen (Jeff) La Grange, Milwaukee Wisconsin; seven grandchildren: Alex, Katie and Jamie Haberlie of Lancaster, Heather and Kyle Streicher of Bettendorf, Iowa and Foster and Anna La Grange of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  She is also survived by her brother, Jack Noble, Seattle, Washington and sister, Linda Noble, Lake Delton, Wisconsin, her brother-in-law, Jerry Moody, Belmont, Wisconsin; and her card club.

     She was preceded in death by her husband, James Haberlie, her parents, J. Stanley and Retha Noble, her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Ed and Rose Haberlie, and a daughter-in-law, Joan Haberlie

     Funeral services were held on Monday, November 23, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at the Lancaster Congregational Church in Lancaster with Pastor Mark Dieter officiating.  Burial was in the Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster.  Friends called on Sunday, November 22, 2009, from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the church and from 10:00 am until the time of services on Monday at the church. Schwartz Funeral Home of Lancaster assisted the family. In lieu of plants and flowers, a Betty A. Haberlie memorial fund has been established.


Robert "Bob" B. Hale

Robert “Bob” Burdette Hale, age 80, of rural Lancaster, died on Easter Sunday, April 4, 2010, at his home surrounded by his loving family.  He was born on April 27, 1929, in Little Grant Township, the son of Irven Webb and Ella Mae (Wilson) Hale.  Bob attended Predeaux Country School in Little Grant.  He enlisted in the US Army and served at Fort Benning from 1948 to1949 and also served in Korea from 1950 to 1951.  Bob was employed at Brodtville Cheese Factory when he met Darleen LaVon Pitzer.  On August 14, 1950, Robert was united in marriage to Darleen Pitzer in Dubuque, IA.  He also worked at Ziegler Hampton Hardware before farming.  Together they farmed from 1955 until his retirement in 1982.  Bob continued to work by delivering milk in Cassville, delivering the Shopping News, and working at the Wonder Wash Car Washes.  He also liked woodworking, fishing and reading westerns.   Bob was a member of the Richard Burns American Legion Post No. 109, where we was adjutant for many years and William Pollock VFW Post No. 2344, both of Lancaster.

In addition to his parents, Robert was preceded in death by a son, Gregory; three brothers and one step-sister: Elmo, Harold, Charles and Gladys Specht.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Darleen Hale, Lancaster; 13 children:  Becky (Gary) Bjorge, DeForest; Robert R., Nekoosa; Kim Wilker, Wauzeka; Sheila Albrecht (Richard Boller), Prairie du Chien; Todd (Jane), Montfort; Rodney (Brenda), Wisconsin Rapids; Timothy (Carol), Baldwin; Scott (Maureen), Stanchfield, MN; Kurt (Deb), Lancaster; Eric, Lancaster; Kristin (Frank) Ries, Marquette, IA; Jennifer Wepking (Brian Wepking), Lancaster and Kerri (Jason) Damm, Fort Atkinson; 40 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Julie Hale, New Lisbon; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 7, 2010, at 1:00 p.m. at Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster with Reverend Mary Ann Floerke officiating.  Burial was in Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster with Military Honors provided by the Richard Burns American Legion Post No. 109 and William Pollock VFW Post No. 2344, both of Lancaster.  Family and friends called on Wednesday, April 7, 2010, from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.            


JoAnne M. Halferty

     JoAnne Marie Halferty, age 71, of Lancaster, died on Tuesday, November 24, 2009, at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, Lancaster.  She was born on April 7, 1938, in Hinckley, IL, the daughter of Frank T. and Edith (Blanchard) Bullock.  She attended grade school in Red Oak, IA.  In 1955, JoAnne graduated from Central High School in LaCrosse.  She furthered her education at WI State University in Eau Claire, where she studied English and Library Science.  In 1964, JoAnne graduated from the UW-Madison with a masters degree in Library Science.  On September 19, 1964, JoAnne was united in marriage to James B. Halferty at the Methodist Church in LaCrosse.  After their marriage, JoAnne was employed with the UW-Platteville.  In 1977, she became the director of the Lancaster Public Library and for the next twenty-six years, she led the community in adding twice the space to the building and bringing the collection on-line.  JoAnne retired in 2003.  She was a member of PEO, Lancaster Congregational Church and multiple bridge clubs.  In her retirement years, JoAnne enjoyed spending time with her family, playing bridge, reading cozy novels, and doting on her grandchildren.  She was an enthusiastic birder, feeding and providing homes for many species of birds near her home in North Lancaster Township. 

       Survivors include her husband of forty-five years, James B. Halferty, Lancaster; Matthew (Laurie) Halferty, Pewaukee; Susan (Jay) Pence, Victor, ID; Laura (Jay) Krishnan, Minneapolis, MN; and three grandchildren: Thomas and Ryan Pence and Sameer Krishnan.

       In addition to her parents, JoAnne was preceded in death by her brother, Frank.

       Funeral services were held on Monday, November 30, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at the Lancaster Congregational Church with Rev. Mark Dieter officiating.  Burial was in Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster.  Friends called on Sunday, November 29, 2009, from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the church and from 10:00 a.m. on Monday until time of services.  A JoAnne M. Halferty memorial fund has been established.  Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster is assisting the family.


Charles D. Hall

     Charles D. Hall, age 63, of Lancaster, died on Sunday, August 10, 2008, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison.  He was born on July 20, 1945, in S. Lancaster Township, the son of Doris and Mary (Marcue) Hall, Sr.  He married Delores M. Purkapile on September 23, 1967 at the First Presbyterian Church in Lancaster.  Charlie was employed at the mines in Tennyson and for Dillman Brothers which later became Kowalski-Kieler in Lancaster.  He was a lifetime member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church.  Charlie enjoyed hunting, fishing and joking around with his family.  He was looking forward to becoming a great-grandfather. 

     Charlie is survived by his wife, Delores, Lancaster; a daughter, Lisa (Charlie) Rauch, Cassville and  a son, Leonard, Lancaster; two grandchildren:  Andrew (Amanda Buss) Landon, and Abbey Rauch; two sisters, Phyllis (Dale) French, Mt. Hope and Pauline (Jim) Pitzen, Lancaster; one brother, Carl (Kathy) Hall, Platteville; a sister-in-law, Robin Hall, Hazel Green; mother-in-law, Janice Purkapile, Boscobel, many nieces and nephews.

     He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Doris Hall, Jr.

     Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 14, 2008 at the Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster with Pastor Mark Hoehne officiating.  Burial was in the Hillside Cemetery in Lancaster.  Family and friends called from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 13, 2008 and from 9:30 a.m. until time of services Thursday at the funeral home.


Lavon H. Hall

Lavon H. Hall, age 82, of Lancaster, died on Thursday, January 19, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, IA. She was born on September 2, 1929, on the family farm in Grant County, the daughter of Earl and Beatrice (Brandemuehl) Hoffman. Lavon attended country school and graduated from Lancaster High School. She furthered her education at business school in Milwaukee. On January 20,1951, Lavon was united in marriage to Lavon C. Hall, her high school sweet heart. After their marriage, Lavon raised her family. She was a bookkeeper for the Orange Crush Pop Factory of Lancaster and she later began employment at the Independent, where she undertook a variety of duties. She was a member of the Lancaster United Methodist Church. Lavon had a passion for her family as well as genealogy. She housed a large portion of the Grant County Historical library. Local history was very important to her and she served on many local organizations and committees to preserve such history.

Survivors include her three children: Michael J. (Patricia A. Brown) Hall, Madison; Nancy L. (ne: Hall) Beam, Davenport, IA; Brian S. Hall, LaCrosse; two grandsons: Phillip M. (Tricia ne: Welch) Beam and Eric D. (Sara Wright) Beam; three great-grandchildren; Olivia Lavon, Emma Lee, and Kyndel Adeline , Bettendorf, IA; two sisters: Jean (ne: Hoffman) (Ken) Irish, Bagley; Eunice Wyleen (ne: Hoffman) (Clark) High, Amherst; a brother-in-law, Ralph Alcorn; Lancaster; numerous nieces, nephews, and many friends.

In addition to her husband, Lavon was preceded in death by a son-in-law, David A. Beam; three sisters: Marian (Curt) Welch, Joanne (Duane) Schneider, and Lois Alcorn; and a brother-in-law, David Alt.

Funeral services were on Monday, January 23, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. at the Lancaster United Methodist Church with Pastor Barbara Cook officiating. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster. Family and friends  called on Sunday, January 22, 2012, from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the Martin Funeral Home in Lancaster and on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the church.


 

Veronica F. "Frances" Hall

     Veronica “Frances” Hall, age 99, of Lancaster, died on Sunday, September 7, 2008, at the Lancaster Care Center, Lancaster.  She was born December 9, 1908, in Platteville, the daughter of Hollis and Mary (Fuerstenberg) Cummins.  On June 29, 1929, Frances was united in marriage to Nathan C. Hall in LaCrosse, Wisconsin.  Frances was a member of St. Clement Catholic Church, Lancaster.  She enjoyed listening to her scanner and going out to eat fish.

     Survivors include her children: James (Rachel) Hall, Dubuque, IA; Jane (Kent) Borcherding, Hazel Green; ten grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, LaVon H. Hall, Lancaster; other relatives and many friends.

     In addition to her parents, Hollis and Mary Cummins, Frances was preceded in death by one son, LaVon C. Hall on February 28, 2003; and sisters, Martha Cummins and Gertrude Ellis.

      Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 11, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster with Father William Seipp officiating.  Burial was in St. Clement Cemetery, Lancaster.  Friends called on Thursday, September 11, 2008, from 9:00 a.m. until time of services at the church. 


Lorna W. Hamilton

     Lorna W. Hamilton, age 54, of Lancaster, died on Sunday, February 1, 2009, at her home in Lancaster.  She was born on December 22, 1954, in Keshena, Shawano County, WI, the daughter of Hank and Roberta (Warrington) Webb.  Lorna attended school at West Grant and was a member of the graduating class of 1973.  On February 11, 1974, she was united in marriage to Bobby Hamilton in Kahoka, MO.  After their marriage, the couple resided in the Bloomington area.  Lorna moved to Dubuque, IA, where she was employed as a CNA with the Sisters of Charity and volunteered for Dubuque Hospice.  Lorna loved her work.  She also loved spending time with her grandchildren, cooking and catering.  She also enjoyed making crafts.

       She is survived by her children:  Jesse (Nicole) Hamilton, Bloomington; Nicole (Chris Kelz) Hamilton, Lancaster; four grandchildren:  Tyson and Tavian Kelz and Owen and Eli Hamilton; her brother and sister:  Joe (Bertha) Webb, Avon, CO; Janita Kleinow, Bloomington; her father, Hank Webb, Bagley and nieces and nephews.

       Lorna was preceded in death by her mother, her husband, her brother, Skippy Webb and a nephew, Seth Kleinow.

       Memorial services were held on Thursday, February 5, 2009, at 1:00 p.m. at Marian Hall, Mt. Carmel, in Dubuque, IA.  Memorial services were also held on Friday, February 6, 2009, at 12:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington.  Burial was in Nagle Cemetery, Patch Grove Township.  Friends called on Friday, February 6, 2009, from 9:00 a.m. until time of services at the church.    In lieu of plants and flowers, a Lorna W. Hamilton memorial fund was established.   


Emma E. Hampton

Emma E. Hampton, age 91, of Lancaster, formerly of Bloomington, died on Thursday, January 6, 2011, at the Lancaster Care Center in Lancaster.  She was born on July 21, 1919, in Beetown Township, the daughter of Sidney and Wessie (Dudley) Gates. Emma graduated from Bloomington High School.  She was employed at the Bloomington Telephone Company as an operator.  Emma later was employed as a secretary at the Agriculture and Soil Conservation Services office.  She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington.  Emma enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and keeping up with her active family. 

Survivors include her children:  Linda (Larry) Watchorn, Fennimore; Paul (Jeanne) Hampton, Dubuque, IA; Kris (Faye) Hampton, Cottage Grove; grandchildren: Sherri (John Schurman) Wenzel, Dodgeville; Juanita (Bob) Caley, Lancaster; Tim (Dawn) Wenzel, Sun Prairie; Michael Hampton, Madison; David Thornell, Rockford, IL; Marnie Wetzatain, Rochester, MN; Ross Hampton, Stoughton; Katherine (Ed) Oliver, Monona; Jessica Hampton, Stoughton; great-grandchildren: Jonathan (Michelle) Kane, Palm Harbor, FL; Kevin and Amy Wenzel; Jack Oliver; Brianna and Emma Hampton; her sister, Mary Ettelson, Clovis, CA; her brother, James (Joan) Gates, Madison; sister-in-law, Virginia Gates, Lancaster; and many members of the Gates and Hampton families.

In addition to her parents, Emma was preceded in death by her daughter, Judy Karle, her brothers, John and Walter Gates and a sister, Ruth Zenz.

Funeral services were held on Monday, January 10, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington with Father John Meinholtz officiating.  Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bloomington.  Family and friends called on Monday, January 10, 2011, from 9:00 a.m. until time of services at the church.  Martin Funeral Home in Bloomington is assisting the family.


Heidi M. Handal

Heidi Margret Handal, age 20, of Lancaster, went home to be with her Savior on Monday, July 25, 2011 at Southwest Health Center in Platteville. She was born on August 25, 1990, in Iowa City, IA, the daughter of Issa and Mary (Rader) Handal. Heidi graduated from Lancaster High School in 2008. She furthered her education at the University of Wisconsin Platteville, where she was a junior majoring in Accounting. Heidi was serving an internship at DuTrac Community Credit Union in Dubuque, IA, as an internal auditor. She was a member of the Rolling Hills Church in Platteville. Heidi loved to cook and gather people together to share her love of food. She also enjoyed the art of spinning wool. Heidi had a vast knowledge of trivia and facts.

Survivors include her parents, Issa and Mary Handal, Lancaster; her sister, Hannah Handal, Lancaster; maternal grandparents, Jacqueline and John Rader, Lancaster; aunts, uncles, other relatives and many friends.

Heidi was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Hanna and Margret “Tata” Handal.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 28, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at the Lancaster Congregational Church with Pastor Jeff Nettles and Pastor Mark Dieter officiating. Private family burial was in Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster. Family and friends called on Wednesday, July 27, 2011, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Lancaster Congregational Church and on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the church. Harper, age 92, of Lancaster, died on Thursday, May 21, 2009, at his home in Lancaster.  He was born on February 24, 1917, in Red Cedar (now Durand), the son of Hugh Allen and Florence Gertrude (Burr) Harper.  Bill graduated from Lancaster High School in 1935.  He was a great athlete who lettered in football, basketball, and baseball while he attended college at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Idaho.  While attending college in Idaho, he began to work for MK on Wake Island to earn money for medical school.  During the attack on Pearl Harbor, Wake Island came under siege and on December 23, Wake Island fell into Japanese hands.  Most of the MK civilian employees and military were taken to China and Japan prisoner of war camps until the war ended in 1945.  Bill received an honorable discharge from the Navy.  The men of Wake Island have remained friends to this day.  On July 27, 1946, William was united in marriage to Shirley Jean Walker in Madison.  Together they farmed and raised a family at Cornerstone Farm in Lancaster. 

            Survivors include his nine children, David (Donna); Jeffrey; Robert; Neal (Marilyn); Sharon; Jules (Mac); Jane; Lisa (Tod); and Lora; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his sister, Jean (Bob) Nauman.

            In addition to his parents, William was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, and a granddaughter, Stephanie Muldoon; three sisters:  Dorothy Tucker, Ann Padgett, Alice Stokes, and a brother, Hugh. 

            Memorial services with military honors were held on Saturday, June 13, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at the Youth and Ag Building in Lancaster.  Burial was at a later date.  There was no visitation prior to services.  Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster assisted the family.  In lieu of plants and flowers, a William C. Harper memorial fund has been established.


Helen T. Hatch

     Helen T. Hatch, age 98, of Lancaster, died on Friday, September 19, 2008, at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, rural Lancaster.  She was born on January 18, 1910, in Luxemburg, Iowa, the daughter of Ernest H. and Catherine (Steffen) Goebel.  She left Iowa at the age of twenty-two, but was always loyal to her home state and her family.  On May 23, 1932, Helen was united in marriage to Stanley K. Hatch at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster, where she has lived for the past 76 years.  Helen and her husband started The Reminder in 1932, publishing it out of their home.  The Reminder is still being published today.  She was a member of St. Clement Catholic Church, its CCW, and Legion of Mary.  Helen was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary, which she represented at local grade schools where she spoke to children and gave them a US flag.  She loved flowers, gardening and enjoyed the outdoors.  The most important part of her life was her family which brought her great happiness and pride.  Helen will always be remembered for her love of her family, her country and her faith in God.

     In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley on February 10, 1985, a son, David John Hatch in 1962, two grandchildren, sisters: Martha Lechtenberg, Irene Block and Othilda Sherman, brothers, Raymond, Leander, Eugene and Hilarry Goebel, and a sister-in-law, Lucile Hatch.

      Survivors include her two sons: James (Pat) Hatch, Madison; Toni (Anita) Hatch, Portage; her daughter: Diane Hatch Ertz, Madison; thirteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; two sisters: Louise (Art) Ries, New Vienna, IA; Virginette (Loras) Hosch, Dubuque, IA; sister-in-law, Bertha Goebel, Luxemburg, IA; and many nieces and nephews.

      Funeral services were held on Tuesday, September 23, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster with Father William Seipp and Father Carl Ries officiating.  Burial was in St. Clement Cemetery, Lancaster.  Friends called on Tuesday, September 23, 2008, from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church. 


Richard J. Hauck

Richard J. Hauck, age 66, of Lancaster, died on Monday, August 29, 2011, at UW Hospital in Madison. He was born on August 25, 1945, in Lancaster the son of Elgie and Helene (Hauck) McCartney. Richard attended Lancaster High School before enlisting in the United States Army in 1963 serving his country during the Vietnam War. He was honorably discharged in 1967. On August 24, 1968, Richard was united in marriage to Harriet Harper at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster. Following their marriage, the couple made their home in Madison and Denver, settling in Lancaster in 1979. Richard was employed in the hospital lab and also did landscaping. He enjoyed woodworking, music, traveling to Jamaica, and had a passion for cooking. Richard was a member of St. Clement Catholic Church, the William Pollock VFW Post No. 2344 of Lancaster and a lifetime member of DAV.

Survivors include his wife, Harriet Hauck, Lancaster; two daughters: Rebecca Ann (Terry Bell) Hauck, LaCrosse; Christina (Kevin) Hinkley, Madison; step-grandson, Austin Hinkley; two siblings: Bernard (Jan) McCartney, Roy, Washington; Jan (Darrell) Ludvick, Prairie du Chien; other relatives and many friends.

In addition to his parents, Richard was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Hauck.

Funeral services were held on Friday, September 2, 2011, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster with Father William Seipp officiating. Burial with military honors was held in St. Clement Cemetery, Lancaster. Family and friends called on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church. Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster is assisting the family.


Evan J. Hauk

Evan J. Hauk, age 13, of Cassville, died on Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at Grant Regional Health Center in Lancaster.  He was born on November 10, 1997, the son of Jacob and Jessica (Hoffmann) Hauk.  Evan graduated from St. Clement Catholic School in 2010.  He was to be an eighth grader at Lancaster Middle School.  Evan played Lancaster Youth Football.  He was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed fishing, hunting, skiing, and the river.  Evan lived life to the fullest with a heart of gold, adventurous smile, and sky blue eyes. 

Survivors include his parents: Jacob and Jessica Hauk; his sister and brother, Annalise and Aiden, who Evan was a wonderful big brother to; maternal grandparents: Kevin and Julie Hoffmann; paternal grandparents: Betty and Russell Peterson; great-grandparents: James and Betty Hoffmann, Ruth Esser-Recker and her husband Don; uncles: Ryan (Lindsey Meyer) Hoffmann; Nicholas (Katie) Hauk; an aunt, Shelby (Robert) Roe; cousins, and many relatives.

Evan was preceded in death by his grandfather, Richard Hauk; great-grandparents: Kenneth Esser, Walter and Marge Hauk, and Paul and Opal Bartels.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 11, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster with Father William Seipp officiating.  Burial was in St. Clement Cemetery, Lancaster.  Family and friends called on Sunday, July 10, 2011, from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at St. Clement Catholic Church and on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church.  In lieu of plants and flowers, an Evan J. Margaret C. Hauk

     Margaret C. “Marge” Hauk, age 81, of Cassville, passed away on Monday, June 1, 2009, at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, rural Lancaster, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.  She was born on February 10, 1928, in Cassville, the daughter of Louis and Alberta (Scanlan) Uppena.  On August 19, 1946, Marge was united in marriage to Walter Hauk at St. Charles Catholic Church in Cassville.  After graduating from Cassville High School, Marge attended Electronics School in Minneapolis.  Her greatest joy and focus was her family and she leaves behind a rich legacy of her children’s families and their ever extending circles.  Marge was an active member of the St. Charles Parish and the CCW.  She enjoyed quilting with her friends in Burton and could always be counted on as a substitute for the neighborhood card club.  Over the years, she has donated more than eighteen gallons of blood and countless hours of volunteer work.  Marge worked at the Waterloo Township voting station, as an assistant cook, and at the floral shop after raising eleven children.

       Survivors include her children:  Tom (Jan) Hauk, Buckeye, AZ; Ellen (Greg) Koelker, Stoddard; Barb (Chuck) Wright, Potosi; Brian (Jodi) Hauk, River Falls; Kathy (Don) Russell, Cassville; Lori (Dave) Fure, Cassville; Bill (Amy) Hauk, Potosi; daughter-in-law, Betty Peterson, St. Olaf, IA; brother, Gene Uppena, Blue Earth, MN; a sister-in-law, Pauline Uppena, Cassville; brother-in-law, Jerome Hauk, Fennimore; 22 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; other relatives and many friends.

       In addition to her parents, Marge was preceded in death by her husband, Walt; her sons, Dick, Mike and Bob; her daughter, Joyce; a son-in-law, Dave Junk; her sister, Marian Uppena; her brothers, Bob, Charles, and John Uppena; a sister-in-law, Lucille Reynolds and her brothers-in-law, William, Lawrence, and Francis Hauk.

       Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 4, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Charles Catholic Church in Cassville with Father John Norder and Msgr. James Uppena officiating.  Private Family Burial was in St. Charles Cemetery, Cassville.  Friends called on Wednesday, June 3, 2009, from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Cassville and on Thursday, from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church.  Martin Funeral Home in Cassville is assisted the family.  In lieu of plants and flowers, memorials may be offered to the American Cancer Society or to the Juvenile Diabetes Association.

Mary Lou Hauck

     Mary Lou Hauck, age 66, of Lancaster, died on Tuesday, December 15, 2009, at Grant Regional Health Center in Lancaster.  She was born on July 11, 1943, in Burton, the daughter of Ned and Marcella (Kirschbaum) McDonald.  She was raised in Cassville.  On November 25, 1961, Mary Lou was united in marriage to Gerald W. Hauck at St. Charles Catholic Church in Cassville.  She enjoyed crocheting and spending time with her children and grandchildren.  Mary Lou was employed at Loudspeaker Component Corp., Hardee’s and McDonald’s in Lancaster.  She was a member of St. Clement Church.

       Survivors include her four children: Tammy (Mark) Drew, Mt. Hope; Theresa (Darrell) Caley, Beetown; Cindy (Travis) Slama, Marquette, IA; Jerry W. (Gretchen) Hauck, Jr., Dodgeville; six grandchildren: Missy (Dean) Buss, Holden Miller-Hauck, James Slama, Ariana Hauck, Lily Hauck, and Trent Fordney; her brothers: Roger (Mary Kay) McDonald, Cassville; Jack (Dee) McDonald, Potosi; a sister-in-law, Janis (Darrell) Ludvick, Prairie du Chien; brothers-in-law, Richard (Harriet) Hauck, Lancaster; Bernie (Jan) McCartney, Tacoma, WA; and a special friend, Doug Glass, Bagley.

       In addition to her parents, Mary Lou was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald on January 10, 2006; her mother and father-in-law, Helene and Elgie McCartney, her brother, Phil McDonald, and sister and brother-in-law, Karen and Richard Kann as well as her beloved dog, Princess.

       Funeral services were held on Friday, December 18, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster with Father William Seipp officiating.  Burial was in St. Clement Cemetery, Lancaster.  Friends called on Thursday, December 17, 2009, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster and from 9:30 a.m. until time of services on Friday at the funeral home.


Marion K. Hazen

     Marion K. Hazen, age 79, of Mount Hope, died Thursday, August 14, 2008 at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.  She was born on March 28, 1929 in Lime Springs, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Elsie (Baethke) Kubicek.  Marion graduated from Manitowoc High School.  Marion was united in marriage on June 12, 1948 to Adelbert P. Hazen at Mount Hope United Methodist Church.  He preceded her in death on December 22, 1987.  She received her Master’s Degree in teaching from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.  Marion taught in the Lancaster School District, including many years at Winskill before retiring.

     Marion was a lifelong resident of Mount Hope and was active in her church, Mount Hope United Methodist.  She was a member of the Legion Auxiliary, Park Board, Mount Hope Historical Society, Grant County Historical Society and the Old Friends Reunion Committee.  Marion also enjoyed researching genealogy and made three trips to Czechoslovakia.  She also enjoyed playing cards and bowling with her husband, Adelbert.  Marion also loved to spend time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

     Marion is survived by two sons:  Larrie (Diana) and Rick (Judy) Hazen, both of Mount Hope; five grandchildren:  Douglas (Tonya) Hazen and their two daughters, New Ulm, MN, David (Dawn) Hazen and their three sons, Jackson, WY, Kayla (Mark) Schmitt and their daughter, Rio, WI, Kara (Dan) Cordova and their two daughters and one son, Miami, FL, and Karla (Jason) Dummer and their daughter and son, Holmen; two sisters and one brother, Thelma (Roger) Reukauf, North Fond Du Lac, Donna Dressler, Patch Grove and Robert (Chris) Kubicek, Mineral Point.

     She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Adelbert.

     Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 17, 2008 at Mount Hope United Methodist Church with the Reverend Mary Ann Floerke officiating.  Burial was held at a later date at Hermitage Cemetery, Town of Mount Hope.  Family and friends were welcomed from 12:00 noon until time of services Sunday at the church. 


Victoria E. Haverland

Victoria E. “Babe” Haverland, age 91, of Potosi, passed away Wednesday, November 2, 2011, at Manor Care in Platteville.  Victoria was born on November 22, 1919 in Glen Haven, WI, the daughter of Clement and Mary (Blum) Gruender.  She was a graduate of St. Andrew High School, Tennyson, and St. Mary’s Teachers College at Prairie du Chien.  Her first teaching job was in New Diggins.  Victoria married Orlin Haverland on September 16, 1942 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Glen Haven.  After her marriage, she enjoyed raising her family and later taught at SS. Andrew-Thomas School.  She was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church and past president of the Altar Sodality.  Victoria was also member of the Catholic Knights and VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

She is survived by six children:  Elaine (Bruce) Shanley, Platteville; Annette (Dan) Kitto, Waukesha; and Paul (Sandy) Haverland, Cassville; Keith, Joel (Sherrill), and Alan Haverland, all of Potosi; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Victoria was preceded in death by her husband, Orlin, on February 10, 2002; two brothers, Urban and Alphonse Gruender; five sisters, Veronica Lessner, Cecelia Bredael, Johanna Kalrath, Bernetta Hennebry, and Phyllis, Connell; and a grandson, David Davis.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 am on Monday, November 7, 2011, at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Tennyson with Father Richard Leffler officiating.  Burial was in St. Andrew Cemetery. Visitation was held from 1 to 4 pm with a 12:45 p.m. parish scripture service on Sunday, November 6, at St. Andrew Catholic Church, and one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.  The Martin Funeral Home in Potosi is assisting the family.  Memorials may be given to SS. Andrew-Thomas School. 

            The family would like to thank the staff at Park Place and Manor Care in Platteville for their compassionate care.


Lila Heck

     Lila Heck was born the daughter of Samuel and Rose (Garvey) Murphy on February 13, 1920 in Dubuque, Iowa.  She was born to eternal life on February 21, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, with her family at her side.  Those left to cherish Lila’s memory are her husband, George, her children, Bill (Lori) Heck of Wauwatosa, WI, Rose (Dan) McEleney of Clinton, IA and Mary Ann (Phil) Stroud of Los Alamos, NM, sisters Leona Leighton of Lancaster, WI and Aleatha Kadinger of Sturgis, SD, twelve grandchildren, Patrick, Katie, Mark, Sophia, Stephan, Gina, Melissa, David, Colleen, Samuel, Jennifer and Rachael, and many nieces, nephews and friends.  She was preceded by her parents, her sister Esther Temple, her  brothers Francis, Sylvester, James and Lloyd and her grandson Michael.

     Lila grew up in South Dakota where she loved to ride horses and help on her parents’ farm.  Her family moved to Prairie du Chien, where she graduated from St. Mary’s Academy.  Lila and George were married on June 25, 1955, and settled in Potosi, WI.  She was active in her children’s school and with St. Andrew-Thomas parish in Potosi.  Lila sold monuments for many years, and touched the hearts of people across Southwestern Wisconsin.  Always one to help those in need, Lila cared for her family members in their advancing years. 

     Lila loved to cook, and would spoil her family with cookies, decorated cakes, fudge and other delights.  She enjoyed a game of euchre with her friends and family, and taught her grandchildren how to play.  Lila and George enjoyed traveling as well, visiting their ancestry homes of Ireland and Germany.  She enjoyed writing and was proud of her Irish heritage.  Lila researched her family history and compiled numerous stories to be cherished for generations.  This Christmas Lila gave her grandchildren a book of her original poems and writings that are enjoyed by all.  Her china paintings will be treasured by her family for generations.

     Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 26, 2008, at St. Andrew Catholic Church, Tennyson, at 11:00 a.m. with Father Richard Leffler officiating.  Burial was in St. Thomas Cemetery, Potosi.  Friends were welcomed on Monday, February 25, 2008, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the Martin Funeral Home in Potosi.


Walter E. Hemple

     Walter E. Hemple, age 77, of Dubuque, died Tuesday, June 10, 2008 at Dubuque Nursing & Rehab Center.

     Funeral Services were held on Friday, June 13, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Dubuque with The Reverend Merlin Schlichting officiating.  Burial was in Cassville Cemetery immediately following funeral services. 


Dennis J. Herbers

     Dennis J. Herbers, age 63, of Bloomington died Saturday, January 31, 2009 at the Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien.  He was born on December 4, 1945 in Lancaster, the son of John and Margaret (Esser) Herbers.  Dennis was united in marriage to Betty J. Kress on September 21, 1964 in Ironwood, MI.  Together they farmed in the Bloomington area.  He owned We Care Feeds in Patch Grove, and was employed at Golden Harvest and Kussmaul Seed Companies.  Dennis was an avid sports fan and enjoyed playing softball.  He was also a basketball coach and referee.

    Dennis is survived by his wife, Betty, Bloomington; four children:  Vicki (Bob) Hudecek, DeForest, Susan (fiance, Mike Berger) Herbers , LaCrosse, Brian (Lisa) Herbers, DeForest and Laurie (Scott) Beardslay, Wichita, KS; six grandchildren:  Jacquelyn, Amanda, Daniel, Alysia, Jonathan and Hope; his mother, Marge Herbers, Bloomington; four brothers:  Roger (Kayla) Herbers, Woodman, Dale (Marge) Herbers, Beaver Dam, Allen (Nancy) Herbers, Mindoro and Mark (Gwen) Herbers, Bloomington; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

       He was preceded in death by his father.

       Funeral services were held at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, February 4, 2009 at Martin Funeral Home in Bloomington with Reverend Kurt Liebenow officiating.  Burial of cremains will be held at a later date.  Family and friends were welcome from 10:00 a.m. until time services Wednesday at the funeral home


Edward J. Herbers

Edward J. Herbers, age 92, of Bloomington, died on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at Evansville Manor in Evansville.  He was born on May 5, 1918, in Bloomington, the son of Frank and Mary (Klosterman) Herbers.  Edward attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Bloomington.  In September of 1942, he entered the United States Army and served his country during World War II in five campaigns.  He was honorably discharged in November of 1945.  On February 3, 1953, Edward was united in marriage to Irene Felder at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Glen Haven.  After their marriage, the couple farmed on the family farm near Bloomington, retiring in October of 1976.  Early in his working career, Edward also sold insurance.  He was strong in his Catholic faith and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington as well as the Knights of Columbus.  Edward was also a member of the Abraham Hickok Wetmore American Legion Post No.148 of Bloomington.  He enjoyed playing cards and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his children:  Monica (Bill) Gierach, Greendale; Charles (Threasa) Herbers, Bloomington; Jeffery (Deb) Herbers, Evansville; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his sisters: Catherine Horne, Cleveland Heights, OH; Florence Herbers, West Chicago, IL; other relatives and many friends.

In addition to his parents, Edward was preceded in death by his wife, Irene, his sisters and brothers, Rose Breuer, John Herbers, Reverend Charles Herbers, Henrietta Sanders; and a great-grandson, Joseph Troxel.

Roy F. Hermsen

Roy F. Hermsen, age 81, of Bloomington, died on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at UW Hospitals in Madison. He was born on July 2, 1929, in Bloomington, the son of Edward J. and Magdeline “Lena” (Maiers) Hermsen. Roy graduated Bloomington High School in 1947. He married Mary Jane Rogers on November 9, 1950, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington. Roy was drafted into the United States Army in 1951, during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1953. It was in that same year that Roy became a partner in E.J. Hermsen and Sons in Bloomington. Hermsen’s Ace Hardware has proudly been in the Hermsen family since 1942. Roy was a lifetime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and a member of Abraham Hickok Wetmore American Legion Post No. 148 of Bloomington. He donated his time and effort to many Bloomington organizations. Roy was devoted to his family and operating the family business, which was his favorite hobby and past time.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Jane Hermsen; his children: Daniel (Julie) Hermsen; Sue (Jim) Bausch; Jane (Greg) Patterson; grandchildren: David (Jessica) Hermsen; Jen (Brian) Thiry; Kate (Scott) Bunge; Steve (Angie Bausch) Gotto; Megan (Greg) Miles; Michael (Nicole) Patterson; Carolyn (Hans) Christiansen; and Christine Patterson; his great-grandchildren: Ava, Zachary, Jaxson, Brady, Brock, Brielle, Isaac and one on the way; a sister, Charlotte Kluesner; and many nieces and nephews.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: Alfred and Edward Jr., four sisters: Marie Leamy, Lucille Hermsen, Delores Willoughby, and a sister in infancy.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 27, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington with Father John Meinholz officiating. Burial with military honors was in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bloomington. Family and friends called on Tuesday, April 26, 2011, from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church where a 2:45 p.m. parish scripture service will be held. Marty C. Hicks

Marty C. Hicks, age 47, of Platteville, died on Thursday, August 25, 2011, at his home. He was born on April 30, 1964, in Rantoul, IL, the son of Samual and Bettie (Martin) Hicks. Marty graduated from Platteville High School and furthered his education at Southwest Technical College in Fennimore. He then served his country for four years in the United States National Guard. Marty enjoyed carpentry work and had a passion for space and the solar system. He was currently building an electronic model of the solar system. Marty was a member of EAA.

Survivors include his mother, Bettie Martin, Dubuque, IA; two sisters: Michele (Craig) Hicks Clark, Dubuque, IA, and their children, Dustin, Ariel, and Collin; Myleen (Mike) Bell, Des Moines, IA, and their child, Cooper; uncles: Robert (Delores) Martin, Belmont; Steve (Becky) Martin, Wauzeka; other relatives and many friends.

Marty was preceded in death by his father in 1982 and two uncles, Carl and Jack Martin.

Graveside services with military honors were held on Monday, August 29, 2011, at Mifflin Cemetery, Mifflin Township at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Mark Hoehne officiating. Martin Schwartz Funeral Home in Platteville is serving the family.


Alice M. Hill

     Alice M. Hill, age 72, of Platteville, formerly of Lancaster, passed away Saturday, March 15, 2008 at Southwest Health Center in Platteville.  She was born on July 6, 1935 in Beetown, WI, the daughter of James and Melinda (Block) Atkinson.  Alice married Lavern Hill on August 1, 1979 in Mt. Vernon, IL.  She departed this life surrounded by her loving husband and family. 

     Alice was a member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary Post #5274 of Platteville and the 40 & 8 Club.  She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, baking cookies for her grandchildren and pies for her sons-in-law.  She made quilts and craft items that were enjoyed by many.  Alice also made dolls which made their way over seas.

     Alice is survived by her husband, Lavern Hill, Platteville; eight children:  Charles E. (Robin) Vance, Lancaster; Gary (Patsy) Vance, Viola; Linda (Robert) Poyner, Santee CA; Cheryle (Joe) Hesseling, Madison; Valerie (Gary) Hall, Logan, OH; James F. Vance (friend, Laurie), Wausau; Jeffrey Vance, Janesville and Brenda (Rick) Pavlovich, Winnebago, IL; a step-son, Alan (Toni) Hill, FL; 25 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and the family dog, Teddy.

     She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Grant and Leo Atkinson; a sister, Betty Gilbert and a grandson, Brandon Vance.

     Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 20, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster with Reverend Michael Short officiating.  Burial was in Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster.  Family and friends were welcomed from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19 with a VFW Women’s Auxiliary Service at 4:00 p.m. and from 10:00 a.m. until time of services Thursday all at the funeral home.


Doris R. Hind

     Doris Rose Schollmeyer Hind died on Thursday, September 27, 2007 at the Woodside Hospice House in Pinellas Park, Florida. She was born in Potosi, Wisconsin on October 25, 1936, and is a former resident of Albany, Georgia, Seneca Falls, New York, and most recently, Leesburg, Florida.

     A beloved and dedicated wife and mother, Rose is survived by her two sons, Hobart Martel Hind, Jr. (wife Mary and daughter Phoebe) of St. Petersburg, Florida and Anthony Schollmeyer Hind (wife Gretchen and son Henry) of Evanston, Illinois; her sister Donna Lee Weber of Wonewoc, Wisconsin; brother-in-law Delbert Fritz of Potosi, Wisconsin; sister-in-law Valerie Waddingham of Santa Rosa, California, and many nieces and nephews. 

      Rose is preceded in death by her husband Hobart Martel Hind, her parents Wilbert and Eleanor Schollmeyer and sister Elaine Fritz. 

     Graveside Services were held at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 3, 2008 at Van Buren Cemetery, Potosi Township with Teri Hanson officiating.


David A. "Scram" Hines

     David A. “Scram” Hines, age 37, of Cassville passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2009.  He was born on August 31, 1971 in Lancaster, the son of Lewis and Barbara (Wentz) Hines.   He graduated from Lancaster High School in 1990.  David was united into marriage to Shaun E. Koelker on June 5, 2003 at the Cassville Riverside Park.  He has been employed at the Gary and Sandra Adams Family Farm all of his working life.  David was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, camping, snowmobiling and four-wheeling.  He built many things by hand, which included a family horse arena where he liked to rope and ride.  Above all, his greatest joy in life was his daughter, Hailey.

       Survivors include his wife, Shaun and daughter, Hailey of Cassville; his father, Lewis (Elaine Muldoon) Hines, Lancaster; his mother, Barbara (John) Bond, Cassville; his mother and father-in-law, Jackie (Bill) Ley, Cassville; his sisters:  Sheila (Michael) Stelpflug, Bloomington, Rachel (Jason Landon) Hines, Beetown and Sarah (Travis) Kirschbaum, Bloomington; a sister-in-law, Holly (Michael Dressler) Ley, Lancaster; his brothers-in-law, Wyatt Ley, Cassville and Christopher Maahs, Potosi; maternal grandparents, Ike (Louise) Koelker, Cassville and James (Norma Starrett) Ley, Lancaster; nieces and nephews:  Tyler Hines, Samantha, Marissa, Lauren and Jacob Stelpflug, Amber Landon and Braxton Dressler; many aunts, uncles and cousins.

       Memorial services were held on Monday, June 8, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Lancaster with Reverend Pamela Strakeljahn officiating.  Burial was in Beetown Cemetery.  Friends called on Monday, June 8, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. until time of services at the church.  The Martin Funeral Home in Lancaster is assisted the family. 

            In lieu of plants and flowers, a David A. Hines Memorial Fund has been established.


Mavis C. Hochhausen

Mavis C. Hochhausen, age 74, of Beaver Dam, formerly of Cassville, died Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at Beaver Dam Community Hospital. She was born June 3, 1937, the daughter of Charles and Mabel (Ruroden) Bergan. Mavis married Leon P. Hochhausen at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Glen Haven on January 27, 1955. Together they farmed in rural Cassville, near the Hochhausen family farm. She was employed at Rapid Die & Molding in Cassville and later as a CNA at the Lancaster Care Center. After retiring in 2008, she moved to Beaver Dam to be near her family.

Mavis was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Glen Haven. She loved spending time with her family and dearly loved her grandchildren. Mavis enjoyed reading, watching cooking shows, and driving the country side with her sister, Eloise.

Surviving are her children: LuAnn (Bud Frederick) Hochhausen, Belleville; Julie (Scott Vogt) Hochhausen, Mt. Horeb; Steven (Diana) Hochhausen, Platteville; Kari (Curt) Raisbeck, Beaver Dam; 6 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and a sister Eloise Kirschbaum, Cassville,

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Leon, a son Douglas, her sister Cecelia (Calvin) Harbough, and a brother-in-law LaVerne Kirschbaum.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 27, 2011 at 10:00am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Glen Haven with Fr. John Meinholz officiating. Burial was in the Gockel Cemetery, Glen Haven. Family and friends called on Friday, August 26, 2011 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at Martin Funeral Home in Cassville, where a 7:00pm parish scripture service was held.


Donna D. Hocking

Donna D. Hocking, age 51, died on Saturday, December 4, 2010, at Grant Regional Health Center in Lancaster.  She was born in Watertown, South Dakota on May 16, 1959, the daughter of Gordon and Louellen Teeters. She belonged to a family of 3 children: two brothers, Scott and Lane Teeters.  She attended grade school in South Dakota.  The family moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where Donna graduated from high school.  Donna attended Business College in Rockford, Illinois.

Donna married Bruce Hocking in July 25, 1983 in Darlington WI. They have two children, Brandon and Cali. The family farmed near Potosi.  Donna worked at Silva Arrow Trucking Co. for 5 years, and also Swiss Colony in Dickeyville.  Donna enjoyed going to Bingo with her mom and going to NASCAR races with her husband, Bruce. Donna loved animals mainly Black and white cows which decorated the kitchen and her life.  Donna loved the time she spent with her children, family and friends.

Survived by her husband Bruce of Potosi; her son, Brandon of Shullsburg; her daughter, Cali of Potosi; her father, Gordon of Whitehall, MT; her brother, Lane of San Francisco, CA; and many nieces and nephews who love her dearly and that will always love and miss her.

Funeral services were held on Friday, December 10, 2010, at 2:00 p.m. at Orchard Manor Nursing Home Chapel in Lancaster with Pastor Chuck Miller officiating.  Burial will be at a later date. 


James L. Hoehl

     James L. Hoehl, age 61, of Lancaster, died peacefully on Wednesday, February 4, 2009, surrounded by his loving human and feline family at his home in Lancaster.  He was born on January 23, 1948, in Fergus Falls, MN, the son of Herman J. and Mildred (Taylor) Hoehl.  Jim graduated from Wausau High School in 1966. Jim served in the U.S. Air Force from 1967-1971 and furthered his education at the U.W. Marathon County Campus (Wausau, WI) and University of Wisconsin at Madison obtaining an Associates Degree in Accounting and a Bachelor of Business Administration, respectively.  Jim was employed with Food Services of America, Neenah, WI.  In 1989, he relocated to Lancaster to be closer to his family (especially his nephews, Brian and Jason) and worked at Grant County Social Services as a supervisor. His goal to retire and become a full-time volunteer was met in 2003.  Throughout his battle with cancer for 15 years, Jim never waivered from his goal. He gladly gave thousands of hours to over 13 committees and non-profit agencies, e.g., Lancaster Area Community Food Pantry, Salvation Army, St. Clement Church and School, Knights of Columbus, SHARE, American Cancer Society, Disabled American Veterans Transportation, and Orchard Manor.  His greatest achievement was the LIFE program that he established and sustained for the last five years.  Though not expected, he was recognized by The City of Lancaster, Disabled American Veterans, and Wisconsin Food Security Consortium for his dedication.  In addition, he was honored to serve on Bishop Morlino’s Pastoral Council.  Jim was well-known as “Uncle Jim” in Hazel Green as he proudly donned the Southwestern blue and white colors when attending school and sporting events for his nephews, Brian and Jason.  As U.W Madison alumnus, he was an unwaivering, faithful red and white Bucky Badger fan. As sick as he was, he sat up and watched his last Badger basketball game on Saturday. Jim lived for family and his extended family – the community and church.  Throughout his struggle, Jim especially appreciated the constant love and support he received from his “families”.  Their love helped him through much pain and helped him live each day to its fullest. His faith soothed him as he prepared for his journey to eternal life. 

       Survivors include his sister: Carol (Dan) Kopp, Hazel Green; nephews: Brian Kopp, Madison; Jason Kopp, Winona, MN; brother: Joe Hoehl, Platteville; nephew, Jon (Lisa) Siemonsma and children Thomas and Sydney; niece: Shelly (Mike) Eggers and children, Amanda and Adam; sister-in-law: Jan Reese, all of Sioux Falls, SD; his cats: Marigold and Elizabeth.

      He is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles.

       Funeral services were held on Monday, February 9, 2009, at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster at 10:30 a.m. with Father William J. Seipp presiding and Msgr. Daniel T. Ganshert and Msgr. Thomas Baxter concelebrating.  Burial with military honors was at St. Clement Cemetery, Lancaster.  Friends called on Sunday, February 8, 2009, from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 3:00 p.m. at Schwartz Funeral Home, Lancaster.   Friends also called on Monday, from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church. 

       It is Jim’s wish that memorials be sent in lieu of flowers, which in turn will be donated to local non-profit agencies.

       Jim and his family are forever grateful to extended family and friends who showed their affection and concern through countless acts of kindness in the form of prayer, meals, cards, letters and visits.  A special, heartfelt thank you to Grant County Hospice -especially Mary K. and Chris C., who so lovingly cared for Jim, as well as Father Bill and Bill Manthe for always being there for us no matter what time of day it was. 

    “Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some people stay awhile and leave footprints on our hearts and we are never the same.”


Thomas J. Hoesly

     Thomas J. “Tom” Hoesly, age 59, of Lancaster, died on Friday, March 13, 2009, at Grant Regional Health Center, Lancaster.  He was born on September 8, 1949, in Monroe, the son of Sheldon and Marjorie (Bloom) Hoesly.  Tom graduated from New Glarus High School and attended the UW Farm and Industry Short Course in Madison.  On November 28, 1975, he was united in marriage to Vicki Swanson in New Glarus.  The couple have been residents of Grant County for over twenty years.  Tom was a dairy farmer and did custom fencing.  He enjoyed showing cattle and loved spending time with his family and friends.  Tom was a 4-H leader and volunteered for many agricultural projects throughout the farming community.

       He was preceded in death by his parents.

       Survivors include his wife, Vicki of Lancaster; his children:  Seth (Carrie) Hoesly, Berlin; Jessica (Mike) McConnell, Lancaster; two grandchildren:  Katrina and Jonathan Hoesly, Berlin; his brother, Bill Hoesly, Belleville; and his sister, Shelly (Duane) Yager, New Glarus and their son, Alex.

       Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Lancaster with Pastor Mark Hoehne officiating.  Burial was in Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster.  Friends called on Monday, March 16, 2009, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster.  Friends also called on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the church.


Douglas D. Holt

     Douglas D. Holt, age 37, of Platteville, formerly of Potosi, died unexpectedly Friday, July 25, 2008 at his home.  He was born on August 20, 1970 in Lancaster, the son of Donald and Ella (Helbing) Holt.  Doug graduated from Lancaster High School in 1987.

     Doug liked mechanics, motorcycles, playing cards, throwing the frisbee, telling jokes and spending time with family and friends.

     Doug is survived by his mother, Ella Kittoe, Potosi;  two brothers and two sisters:  Larry Holt, Potosi, Pam Arnold, Potosi, Donell Hefel, Dubuque, IA and Kevin Holt, Belmont; many aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

     He was preceded in death by his father, Donald; his brother, Dennis; his step-father, Bob Kittoe; brother-in-law, Kelly Arnold and his grandparents.

     Funeral services were held on Monday, July 28, 2008, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Tennyson with Father Bernard Rott officiating.  Burial was held at a later date in St. Andrew Cemetery, Tennyson.  Family and friends were welcomed on Sunday, July 27, 2008 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Martin Funeral Home in Potosi and from 9:30 a.m. until time of services on Monday at the funeral home. 


Mercedes W. Holzer

Mercedes W. Holzer, age 92, of Lancaster, died on Saturday, July 17, 2010, at Grant Regional Health Center in Lancaster.  She was born on August 12, 1917, in the Boice Creek area of Potosi Township, the daughter of Frank and Rosa (Pennekamp) Holzer.  During World War II, she was employed with Allis Chalmers in West Allis.  She later worked for the Burgess Battery Factory in Platteville, upon its closing; she was employed at the Best Western Welcome Inn, Lancaster.  Mercedes enjoyed cooking, knitting, crocheting, sewing, and gardening.  She was a member of St. Clement Church.

Survivors include her sisters, Mildred Herman, Greenfield; Charlotte Hying, Platteville; two sisters-in-law, Eileen Holzer, Fennimore; Marjorie Holzer, Lancaster; many nieces and nephews.

Mercedes was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers: Donald, Msgr. Ambrose, Norbert, and Jerome; and six sisters: Isabel Flesch, Louise Sarge, Bernadine, Dorothy, Mary, and Rita Holzer.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster with Father William Seipp officiating.  Burial was in St. Clement Cemetery, Lancaster.  Family and friends called on Monday, July 19, 2010, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Lancaster where a 3:45 p.m. rosary will be held.  Friends also called on Tuesday, July 20, 2010, from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church. 


Loren H. Holzinger

      Loren H. Holzinger, age 81, of Lancaster, died on Saturday, June 27, 2009, surrounded by his family at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, Iowa

       He was born on March 10, 1928, in Lancaster, the son of Ellsworth and Ruth (Petty) Holzinger.  Loren was baptized and confirmed at the First Presbyterian Church.  He attended Rock School and graduated from Lancaster High School in 1946.  Loren enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed in Japan during World War II.  Following his honorable discharge in December of 1947, he was employed by the REA.  On June 9, 1948, Loren was united in marriage to Shirley Johnson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA.  They were dairy farmers at Hurricane until 1960, when they moved to Five Points, the Johnson family farm, where Loren raised Herefords and Simmentals.  During this time, Loren was also a DeKalb Seed Corn Dealer.  He retired in 1989, when he and Shirley moved to Lancaster.  Loren will be remembered for his special personality including his many famous comments.  A devoted husband, father and grandfather, his family always came first.  His interests included the Chicago Cubs, deer hunting, fishing, and the Flying Arrows Softball team.

       He is lovingly survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Shirley Holzinger, Lancaster; his five children:  Nancy (Tim) Coles, Lincoln, NE; Charles Holzinger, Carrollton, TX; Peggy (Greg) Jackson, Loyal, WI; Linda Holzinger, Cheyenne, WY; and David (Lynn) Holzinger, Lancaster.  “Bumpa” will be greatly missed by ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two nieces and two nephews.

       In addition to his parents, Loren was preceded in death by his sisters: Agnes Gates and Dorothy Holzinger and his brothers: Harold and Howard Holzinger.

       Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at the First Presbyterian Church in Lancaster at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Mark Hoehne officiating.  Burial with military honors was in Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster.  Friends called on Monday, June 29, 2009, from 4:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster.  In lieu of plants and flowers, memorials may be given to the Lancaster High School Softball program.


Eugene "Gene" F. Hore

Eugene “Gene” Francis Hore, age 70, of Lancaster, died on Thursday, October 8, 2009, at Grant Regional Health Center in Lancaster.  He was born on January 30, 1939, in Lancaster, Wisconsin, the son of Louis and Alberta (Burbach) Hore.  He graduated from Lancaster High School in 1957.  Gene enlisted in the United States Army in 1958 and served his country in Germany as a Military Police Officer.  He was honorably discharged in 1962.  On February 24, 1966, Gene was united in marriage to Lureen Burns in Minnesota.  After their marriage, he was employed as a Supervisor of Quality Control at Skyline for many years, retiring in 1994.  Gene was a member of the William Pollock VFW Post No. 2344 of Lancaster.  He enjoyed collecting guns.

        In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his brother, Raymond Burbach.

       Survivors include his wife, Lureen Hore, Lancaster; three children:  Alan (fiancé Vicki) Hore, Lancaster; Amy (Scott) Wolbers, Naples, FL; Sara (Bob) Jones, Dodgeville; five grandchildren: Andrea and Emily Wolbers, Victoria Hore, Taylor Ore, and Tristan Jones; one brother, James (Mary) Hore, Lancaster; two sisters, Grace (Matt) Lorscheter, Cassville; Josephine Faherty, Burnsville, MN; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dick and Nola Burns, Lancaster; sister-in-law, Harriet Burback, Platteville; many nieces and nephews and many friends.

       Funeral services were held on Monday, October 12, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster with Pastor Barbara Cook officiating where military honors were conducted.  Burial will be held at a later date.  Friends called on Sunday, October 11, 2009, from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster and from 10:00 a.m. until time of services on Monday.


Lureen A. Hore

Lureen A. Hore, age 67, of Lancaster, died on Monday, November 22, 2010, at Lancaster Care Center.  She was born on November 2, 1943 in Lancaster, the daughter of George and Susie (Benoy) Burns.  Lureen graduated from Lancaster High School in 1961.  She furthered her education in Milwaukee to become a legal secretary. On February 24, 1966, Lureen was united in marriage to Eugene “Gene” F. Hore in Minnesota.  Lureen loved her job as a legal secretary for Morse and Roggensack Attorneys in Lancaster until her retirement on July 1, 2007.  She was a member of the Lancaster United Methodist Church.  Lureen enjoyed quilting with her many friends, reading, and working on family genealogy.

Survivors include three children:  Alan (Vicki) Hore, Lancaster; Amy (Scott) Wolbers, Naples, FL; Sara (Bob) Jones, Dodgeville; five grandchildren: Andrea and Emily Wolbers, Victoria Hore, Taylor Ore, and Tristan Jones; her brother, Richard (Nola) Burns, Lancaster; three sisters-in-law, Grace (Matt) Lorscheter, Cassville; Josephine Faherty, Burnsville, MN; Harriet Burback, Platteville; three brothers-in-law, Virgil Kelly, Potosi; Del Schuster, and James (Mary) Hore, all of Lancaster; many nieces and nephews and many friends.

Lureen was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Gene on October 8, 2009; four sisters, Dorothy Collins, Irene Kelly, Patricia Kress, and Nancy Schuster; five brothers, Virgil, Clarence, and Orville Burns; Forrest and Fred Fritz.

Funeral services were held on Friday, November 26, 2010, at 12:30 p.m. at the Lancaster United Methodist Church with Pastor Barbara Cook officiating.  Burial was held at a later date.  Friends called on Friday, November 26, 2010, from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church.  Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster is in charge of the arrangements.


William J. "Bill" Hore

     William J. “Bill” Hore, age 52, of Lancaster, died on Thursday, January 21, 2010, at UW Hospitals and Clinics in Madison.  He was born on November 24, 1957, in Lancaster, the son of James and Mary (Williams) Hore.  He graduated from Lancaster High School in 1976.  On June 3, 1983, Bill was united in marriage to Jean Heer in Fennimore.  He was employed at Latham Tire and Service and Zippy’s Brass Rail in Lancaster.  Bill loved camping and spending time with his family and friends. 

       Survivors include his wife, Jean Hore; his parents, Jim and Mary Hore; his brother, Tom (Anne) Hore and their children, Justin, Jena, and MaKayla, all of Lancaster; sister, Pauline (Jeff) Rice and their children, Ben and Samantha, all of Bartlett, IL; his mother-in-law, Arlene Heer-Reilly, Fennimore; brother and sisters-in-law: Jerome (Ellen Engelkin) Heer and their daughter, Jane, Wauwatosa; Judy (Mark) Johnson and their daughters, Kari and Sarah, all of LaCrosse; Jan (Cecil) Segelken; Eau Claire; other relatives and many friends.

       Bill was preceded in death by his father-in-law, John Heer.

     Arlene Mary (Krueger) Horsfall, age 80, formerly of the areas of Prairie du Chien and Lancaster, passed away quietly at Harmony Assisted Living in Sun Prairie on December 16, 2008 after a short illness.  She was the wife of the late William Horsfall originally from Bloomington, WI.  Arlene was born on December 12, 1928 in Dodgeville, the oldest daughter of George and Louise (Cathman) Krueger.  She was an “A” student in her time at the Little Red School in Millville, WI.  Arlene married Bill Holpin in 1945 and they would later divorce.  They had three sons:  James (deceased), Madison, Larry (Sharon) Holpin and Michael (Elaine) Holpin, both of Oregon, WI.  She later married William “Bill” Horsfall of Bloomington on December 10, 1954.  To this union, Arlene would have one son, William (Michele) Horsfall, Cedar Falls, IA.  She would help raise six children from Bill’s previous marriage to Dorothy (Sudmeier) Horsfall who had previously passed away.  His daughters, Joanne (David, deceased) Kaioula, Donna Horsfall and Joyce (Harold) Taylor, all of Madison and his sons, Roger (deceased) daughter-in-law, Donna Horsfall, Madison, Ed (Judy) Horsfall, Cottage Grove and Leonard (Donna) Horsfall, Norfolk, VA.

       Arlene loved to go fishing and enjoyed camping.  She loved to cook and clean house for her family.  Arlene loved her cat (Beebee) who she would give up to her son, William in Iowa.  She also enjoyed singing the oldies, writing songs and poetry.  Arlene will be remembered for her apple pie.

        Arlene is survived by her sister, Loretta Lenzendorf, Lancaster; two of her three sons, five of her six step-children and her youngest son to her second marriage.  She is also survived by nine natural grandchildren, 17 step-grandchildren and many great-grandchildren from both marriages; an aunt, Mildred Eckbald, MN and many nieces and nephews.

        She was preceded in death by her parents; both of her husbands; a sister, Beverly Foster; a brother-in-law, Bernard Lenzendorf; her son James Holpin and a step-son, Roger Horsfall.

        Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, December 22, 2008 at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster with Father William Seipp officiating.  Burial was held in St. Clement Cemetery.  Visitation was held from 10:00 a.m. until time of services Monday at the church.  Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster served the family. 


Hugh Joseph Horsfall

     Hugh Joseph Horsfall, age 67, passed away on Thursday, September 11, 2008 on the farm with loved ones by his side.  Joe was born on June 30, 1941 in Boscobel, WI to Keith and Elizabeth (Schmeltz) Horsfall.  He attended school at Patch Grove High School.  On August 26, 1961 he married Sharon Kasparek at St. John’s in Patch Grove.

     Joe and Sharon shared the passion of spending time on the farm with their dearly loved grandchildren.  One of the most amazing things about Joe is that he cherished every moment of his time with each grandchild and he made them feel uniquely special.  His life was blessed with many great memories with family and friends.  One of the greatest joys in life was deer hunting at the Horsfall Deer Ranch.  Of all the deer hunting seasons and hundreds of deer shot on the farm, the greatest joy for him was family and friends and the stories behind every season.  The things that brought great pride to him were driving tractors, harvesting the crops and farming with his family.

     Joe is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sharon; five children: Shari (Charles) Christ, Prairie du Chien, Hugh (Charlene) Horsfall, Jr., Verona, Denise (Robert) Ocker, Lake Geneva, Kimberly (Nick) Kirch, Barneveld, Jamie (Heather) Horsfall, Prairie du Chien; eleven dearly loved grandchildren:  Ashley (Seth)  Rice, Joie Rae and Jacob Horsfall, Ava Ocker, Olivia and Maggie Horsfall, Hope and Sierra Francis, Keller, Johan and Clark Kirch, and his siblings, Jean Decker (Joe’s twin sister), Prairie du Chien, Walt (Kathy) Horsfall, Harpers Ferry and Jack (Sue) Horsfall, LaCrosse.

      He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Debbie Govier.

     Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 13, 2008 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Patch Grove with Father Bart Timmerman officiating.  Burial was held at Calvary Cemetery, Prairie du Chien.  Friends called from 4:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Friday, September 12, 2008 at Martin Funeral Home in Bloomington and from 10:00 a.m. until time of services Saturday at the church. 

     In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to be made to be disbursed to local and charitable cancer organizations in Joe’s memory.


Mary C. Hoskins

     Mary C. Hoskins, age 87, a longtime Lancaster resident, passed away at her home, with family members present, on July 25, 2009, after a short illness.  She was born in Lancaster on August 30, 1921, the daughter of Genevive Bennett Carthew and Attorney Harry E. Carthew.  Mary attended Carlton College in Northfield, MN, before graduating from National Teachers College in Evanston, IL, in June, 1943. She worked at Hull House in Chicago prior to teaching first grade at Country Day School in Rockford, IL, then taught as a substitute in Madison, and later taught kindergarten in Lancaster.  She retired from teaching to raise her family.

      She was preceded in death by her husband, best friend and confidant of 59 years, Mark H. Hoskins, Sr., by her beloved daughter Ann Hoskins Germansen and by her parents. 

      She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mark H. Hoskins, Jr. (Cleo) of Lancaster; five grandchildren: Ted Germansen of Missoula, MT, Matt (Jennie) Germansen of Flagstaff, AZ, Jennifer (Jim) Wolf of Darlington, WI, Mike (Tiffany) Hoskins of Atlanta, GA and Jeff (Jami) Hoskins of Rockford, IL, plus two great-grandchildren.  She also continued to retain close family ties with her former son-in-law, Jerry (C’Ann) Germansen of Humboldt, AZ and her first cousin, Joe Bennett of South Carolina.

     During retirement Mary enjoyed many happy years in San Diego, before returning to Lancaster after the death of her husband, Mark.  She was a member, officeholder and past president of Lancaster’s PEO, Chapter X, and a lifelong member of the Lancaster Congregational Church, where she previously volunteered for numerous church functions and taught Sunday School.  In prior years, she enjoyed playing bridge with her friends, and also golf, for which she is remembered as the first female to score a hole-in-one at Lancaster Country Club.

      The family conveys special thanks to Dr. Eric Stader, Grant Regional Health Center, Home Care Select and the Grant County Hospice program for the wonderful care and medical attention provided to Mary during her last illness.  The Schwartz Funeral Home is serving the family.

Harold C. Houston

     Harold C. “Jude” Houston, Jr., age 74, of Potosi died Thursday, April 2, 2009 at his home.  He was born on February 7, 1935, the son of Harold and Winifred (Brown) Houston, Sr. in Sparta, WI.  Harold attended Wards School and graduated from Sparta High School in 1953.  He enlisted in the United States Army in May of 1957 and was honourably discharged in May of 1959.  Harold was united in marriage to Dona M. Krga on February 2, 1963 at Hegewisch United Methodist Church in Chicago, IL.  He worked as a machinist for 36 years for Republic Steel/LTV Steel in Chicago.  Harold retired in 1990 and moved to rural Potosi. 

     Harold was a member of 1st Congregational Church of Sparta and Hegewisch United Methodist Church in Chicago, IL.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, archery, gardening and woodworking.  Harold also was a Boy Scout Leader for Pack and Troop 226, Calumet Council, Indiana.   He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

       Harold is survived by his wife of 46 years, Dona, Potosi; four children, Tina M. Houston, Potosi, George R. (Tina) Houston, Lake in the Hills, IL, Gail M. (Andy) Hill, South Beloit, IL and Andrew C. Houston, Thornton, IL; five grandchildren, Andrew Jr., Raymond, Rachel, Matthew and Eric; his sister, Dawn Hart, Libby, MT and his brother, Richard W. (Connie) Houston, Hobart, IN; three sisters-in-law, Arlene Houston, Dyer, IN, Mary (Greg) Litchfield, Bloomington, IL and Marilyn Monk, Steger, IL; other relatives and friends.

       He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Robert Houston and a brother-in-law, Donald Hart.

       Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 12, 2009 at Davies Memorial Church of Christ in Potosi with Teri A. Hanson officiating.  Burial of his cremains will be held in Woodlawn Cemetery in Sparta at a later date.  Family and friends were welcome on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the church.

       In lieu of flowers and plants, the family prefers Memorials to the Wisconsin Kidney Foundation.


Joslin L. Howen

Joslin L. Howen, age 4, of Lancaster, died of natural causes on Thursday, October 6, 2011, at her home. She was bornon January 11, 2007, in Dodgeville, the daughter of Timothy and Melissa (Hocking) Howen. Joslin attended 4K and Early Childhood at Winskill Elementary School in Lancaster. She attended church and Sunday school at the Lancaster United Methodist Church. Joslin loved to fish and play with her favorite dolly.

Survivors include her parents; her brother, Elliott Howen; her grandparents: Steve (Kathryn) Hocking, Geraldine Wieczorek, and Richard Howen; her great-grandmothers: Carol Hocking and Arlene Mauk; aunts, uncles and cousins.

Joslin was preceded in death by her great-grandfathers: Harold Hocking and Fred Mauk.

Funeral services were held on Monday, October 10, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at the Lancaster United Methodist Church with Reverend Barbara Cook officiating. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster. Family and friends called on Sunday, October 9, 2011, from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster and on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church. In lieu of plants and flowers a Joslin L. Howen Memorial Fund has been established.


Richard C. Huff

Richard C. Huff, 65, Jefferson, passed away on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at the Select Specialty Hospital in Madison.  He was born on July 30, 1945 in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of the late Elwood and Algie (Beetham) Huff.  Richard attended West Grant High School in Patch Grove, Wisconsin.  He moved to the Madison area in 1964 and had resided in Sun Prairie, Madison, Lake Mills, and Jefferson during the past 46 years.

Richard never married and is survived by two brothers; Larry Huff of Mesa, AZ and William Huff of Upland, CA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A memorial service was held on Thursday, May 19, 2011, at 5:30 p.m. at the Claussen Funeral Home in Lake Mills with the Rev. Beth Rohn-Habhegger officiating.  Friends called at the funeral home from 4 p.m. on Thursday until the time of service.

A memorial visitation was held on Friday, May 20, 2011, from 1p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster, Wisconsin.  Burial followed at the Hillside Cemetery in Lancaster.

The family would like to thank the hospital staffs at Fort Atkinson, University, and Select Specialty; and the funeral directors for their assistance and concern.


Jason W. Hugill

     Jason W. Hugill, age 37, of Lancaster, died on Sunday, August 24, 2008, in Lancaster.  He was born on November 12, 1970, in Dodgeville, the son of William and Joann (Colson) Hugill.  Jason attended school in Fennimore.  On June 17, 2005, he was united in marriage to Shali Morrow in Lancaster.  After their marriage, the couple resided in Lancaster.  Jason was employed as a mill worker in Lancaster.  He loved bow hunting, fishing, watching UFC fights, socializing and spending time with his family and friends.  He had a great sense of humor and was loved by all who knew him.

     Survivors include his wife, Shali Hugill of Lancaster; his step-children: Shea Bennett, Platteville; Chelsea Bennett, Lancaster; Tashia, Lancaster; his children: Taylor Kartman, Colton Kartman, Caden Kartman, all of Fennimore; his parents: William and Joann Hugill, Lancaster; his brothers and sisters:  Chad (Christy) Hugill, Fennimore; Troy (Sheri) Hugill, Platteville; Heather (John Chyko) Hugill, Lancaster; Tracy (Matthew) Smith, Cross Plaines; Stacey Hugill, Lancaster; Travis Hugill, Lancaster; mother and father-in-law: Lyle and Karen Morrow, Lancaster; close friend, Derek Millin, Lancaster; other relatives and many friends.

     Jason was preceded in death by his grandparents: Wilbur and Alice Colson and Harold and Charlotte Hugill, his great-grandmother: Nora Hugill and great-grandfather, Arch Hugill.

     Funeral services were held on Thursday, August 28, 2008, at 6:00 p.m. at the Martin Funeral Home in Lancaster with Pastor Mark Hoehne officiating.  Private family burial was at a later date. Friends called on Thursday, August 28, 2008, from 3:00 p.m. until time of services.


William J. Hullermann

     William “Bill” J. Hullermann, age 48, of Patch Grove, died Sunday, October 25, 2009 at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center in LaCrosse.  He was born on October 8, 1961, the son of Thomas and Lois (Reth) Hullermann in Dyersville, IA.  Bill graduated from West Grant High School in 1980.  He was united in marriage to Lori J. Bradley on August 2, 1980 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Patch Grove.  Together they farmed with Bill’s parents and purchased the family farm in 1996.  They also owned and operated Hullermann Trucking.  Bill was a member of the Blakes Prairie Jr. Fair Board and loved being on the river and having fun with his family and friends. 

       Bill is survived by his wife, Lori, Patch Grove; five children:  Chase Hullermann, Mt. Hope, Chassity (Mike) Bennett, Lancaster and their children: Tyler, Tommy and Grace; Crystal (fiancé, Aaron Knapp) Hullermann, Lancaster, Curtis Hullermann, Patch Grove and Courtney (Dan Duncan) Hullermann, Lancaster; his mother, Lois Hullermann, Fennimore; two sisters:  LouAnn (Butch) Horsfall, Patch Grove and Diane (Fred) Skemp, Dubuque, IA; a brother, Mark (Tina) Hullermann, Bloomington; his father and mother-in-law, Fritz and Linda Bradley, Prairie du Chien; brothers and sisters-in-law:  Brenda (fiancé, Ron Marish) Mead, Boscobel, Steve (Ruth) Bradley, Mt. Hope, Karen (Gary) Bartow, Prairie du Chien, Bob (Sandy) Bradley, Bloomington and Kenny Bradley, Prairie du Chien; his beloved dog, T-bone; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

       He was preceded in death by his father, Tom and a brother, Mike.

       Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 29, 2009 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington with Father Bart Timmerman officiating.  Burial was held in Union Nagle Cemetery, Patch Grove Township.  Family and friends called from 3:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28 and from 10:00 a.m. until time of services Thursday all at the church.  Martin Funeral Home in Bloomington served the family.


Sylvina M. Hyer

      Sylvina M. Hyer, age 101, of Lancaster, formerly of Bloomington, died on Monday, February 16, 2009, at the Lancaster Care Center in Lancaster.  She was born on October 10, 1907, in Fall River, WI, the daughter of Lewis and (Helen Bergner) Field.  After attending school, Sylvina became a rural school teacher near Fall River.  On November 23, 1932, she was united in marriage to Ralph Hyer in Galena, IL.  After their marriage, the couple made their home in the Bloomington area where they farmed.  After several years, the couple moved into Bloomington where Ralph was a cheese maker and Sylvina was a librarian.  After their retirement, they split their time between Bloomington and Texas.  Ralph died on May 10, 1985. 

       Survivors include her daughter, Patricia (Jake) Weaver, Bagley; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren.

       In addition to her parents and her husband, Sylvina was preceded in death by a son, Robert, a sister, Zella Pink and a brother, Gilbert Field.

       Funeral services were held on Friday, February 20, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Bloomington with Rev. Mary Ann Floerke officiating.  Burial was in Blakes Prairie Cemetery, Bloomington Township.  Friends called on Friday, February 20, 2009, from 12:00 p.m. until time of services at the funeral home.


Roy H. Hying

       Roy H. Hying, age 102, of Bagley, died on Wednesday, January 11, 2012, at his home. He was born on August 24, 1909, in Texas, the son of John and Catherine Hying. His family moved to Wisconsin by covered wagon. Roy entered the United States Army in 1942 and served his country during World War II stationed in the Pacific, where he earned nine service medals. Following his honorable discharge in 1945, he moved to Dubuque, IA. In 1955, Roy moved to the farm in Bagley, where he has farmed until his retirement in 1990. He was an easy going man who enjoyed fishing.

       Survivors include his sister, Alice Hefel, Cheryl, IA, and many nieces and nephews.

       In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters: Johnny, Maude, Josephine, Lila, George, Frances and Mary.

     Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 14, 2012, at 12:00 noon at Martin Funeral Home in Bloomington with Father John Meinholz officiating. Burial with military honors was on Saturday, January 21, 2012, at 11:30 a.m. at Brodtville Cemetery, Wyalusing Township. Family and friends called on Saturday, January 14, 2012, from 9:00 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.
