Nancy J. Mahoney

     Nancy Jane Mahoney, age 73, of Platteville died Thursday, September 11, 2008 at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Madison.  She was born on October 6, 1934 in Atlantic, Iowa the daughter of Royal Maurice and Lillian Rocetha (Jones) Clithero.  Nancy graduated from Atlantic High School in 1952 and then graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Art Education. 

     Nancy met her husband, George Raymond Mahoney in Iowa City, Iowa and they were united in marriage in 1962.  They moved to Platteville where George became a professor at the University Wisconsin – Platteville.  Nancy taught art at both the middle school and high school in Platteville before starting a family.  Together they raised seven children and eventually she went back into teaching as a substitute teacher in Grant County. 

     Nancy loved art, music, theatre, animals, travel, movies, outdoors, playing scrabble on the computer and riding her bike.  She especially loved her four granddaughters.

     Nancy is survived by seven children:  Thomas (Marcia) Mahoney, Santa Monica, CA and their daughters, Eden Geneva and Savannah Rose; Sara Mahoney, Platteville; Kate Mahoney, Boston, MA; Charlie Mahoney, San Francisco, CA; Leo Mahoney, Platteville; Dan (Dana) Mahoney, Minneapolis, MN and their daughters, Clare Nan and Brin Jensen and Jennifer Mahoney, San Diego, CA; her sister, Jan (Bob) Williams, Atlantic, IA; her cousin Cynthia (Rick) Nicholson, Seattle, WA and many beloved nieces and nephews.

     She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George in October, 1997; her brother, Tom Clithero and her grand-niece, Nikki Poli.

     A Liturgy of the Word was held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 14, 2008 at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Platteville with Monsignor Charles Schluter officiating.  Nancy’s wishes were to be cremated.  In lieu of flowers a Nancy Jane Mahoney memorial fund has been established.


Lawrence G. “Jim” Mahr and Ruth I. Mahr

     Lawrence G. “Jim” Mahr, age 89, of Lancaster, died Wednesday morning, January 30, 2008 at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, rural Lancaster.  Wednesday afternoon, his wife, Ruth Mahr, age 86, also died in the room they shared at Orchard Manor Nursing Home.  Jim was born October 21, 1918 in Platteville, WI, the son of Lawrence and Bertha (Jentz) Mahr.  Ruth was born September 12, 1921 in Stitzer, WI, the daughter of Bud and Nora (Bradley) Chandler.  They were united in marriage on May 27, 1938 in Dubuque, IA.  In May 1939, they moved to Lancaster.  Jim worked for the R.E.A. Co-op (Scenic Rivers) as a line foreman from 1939 until his retirement in 1981.  Ruth was employed at the Budget Shop in Lancaster.  He enjoyed his family, and hunting.  She enjoyed flowers and gardening.  They enjoyed going fishing together and playing cards in their card club.

     They are survived by two sons:  Robert (Joyce) Mahr and Gary (Karen) Mahr, both of Lancaster; seven grandchildren:  Steve (June) Mahr, Olympia, WA; Tina (Rick) Knutson, Cheryl (Todd) Walton, David (Karen R.) Mahr, Brian Mahr, all of Lancaster; Joseph (Kelli) Frommelt, Chesapeake, VA; Dawn (Andy) Droessler, Potosi; 20 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.

     Jim was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Helen Roeder and Katherine Gillmann; his brother, John Mahr; and their grandson, D. J. Heiligenthal.  Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters:  Dorothy Sweeney, and Jan Walker; and three brothers:  Kenneth, Virgil, and Theodore Chandler.

     Funeral services for Jim and Ruth were held on Saturday, February 2, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster with Father William Seipp officiating. Burial was in St. Clement Cemetery, Lancaster.  Visitation was held Saturday, February 2, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church. 


Loretta R. Manuel

Loretta R. Manuel, age 94, of Platteville, died on Saturday, January 15, 2011, at Our House Assisted Living, Platteville.  She was born on February 29, 1916, in Platteville, the daughter of Thomas and Ellenora (Schroeder) Manuel.  Loretta graduated from Platteville High School.  She was employed at O’Neill’s Shoe Store, Schultz’s Department Store and the A&P Store, all in Platteville.  Loretta was a lifetime member of First English Lutheran Church in Platteville.  She loved to crochet and sew and enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading and fishing. 

Survivors include a nephew, Paul Manuel, Florida; dear friends, Rinda (Charlie) Bahr, Laura (Bob) Donner, Anita (Wayne) Carns, all of Platteville; and several cousins.

In addition to her parents, Loretta was preceded in death by her brother, Carl (Delores) Manuel.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 18, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at First English Lutheran Church in Platteville with Pastor Michael Short officiating.  Burial was in Hillside Cemetery, Platteville.  Family and friends called on Tuesday, January 18, 2011, from 9:00 a.m. until time of services at the church.  Martin Schwartz Funeral Home in Platteville is assisting the family.


Eileen J. Markus

Eileen J. Markus, age 76, of Potosi, died on Friday, October 15, 2010 at Grant Regional Health Center in Lancaster.  She was born April 30, 1934, the daughter of Maurice and Lloydia (Turner) Sandercock in Finchley, England.  Eileen was united in marriage to Karl Leo Markus on January 31, 1954 in Naples, Italy.  They resided in Potosi.  She worked at Orchard Manor as a Certified Nursing Assistant and also was a well known cook in the Potosi area.  Eileen loved wildlife and was an avid bird watcher.  

Eileen is survived by her five children:  Dinah Markus, Everett, WA; Rebecca (Joel) Champlin, Ames, IA; Lisa Markus, Glenwood, IA; Brian (Sandra) Markus, Waupun, WI; Charles Markus, Potosi; 10 Grandchildren; 5 Great-grandchildren; her brother, Robert (Mary Ann) Stappert, Potosi; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Karl in 1993; her son, Maurice and a brother, Roger Sandercock.

Funeral services were held on Monday, October 18, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Potosi with Father Bernard Rott officiating.  Burial was held in St. Thomas Cemetery.  Visitation was held from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 17 at Martin Funeral Home in Potosi with a Rosary Service at 2:00 p.m. and on Monday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at the church.  Memorials can be made to the Eileen J. Markus Memorial Fund.


Donald G. Marshall

     Donald G. Marshall, age 80, of Bloomington, passed away on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque surrounded by his family.  He was born on August 21, 1928 in Bagley Township, the son of Ralph and Mary (Myers) Marshall.  Donald married Ruby Revenig on September 4, 1948 in Dubuque, Iowa.  He worked hard all his life in bricklaying and formed Tri County Masonry in Bloomington.  Donald started farming in Bagley and relocated to Bloomington.  He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington and was the President of Blakes Prairie Cemetery for many years.  Donald was a loving father and grandfather.  He also loved to fish, hunt and play cards. 

     Donald is survived by his wife, Ruby, Bloomington; five children, Carol (John) Long, Potosi, Glenn Marshall (friend, Jenny Ludwig), Bagley, Donna (Joe) Crubel, Mount Hope, Jason (Melody) Marshall, Wichita, KS and Angila (Robert) Moore, Sacramento, CA; 16 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; four sisters, Dorothy Clark, Hunnewell, MO, Betty Brennan, Dubuque, IA, Phylis Lambert, Savanna, IL and Shirley (Donald) Schueller, Dubuque, IA; many nieces and nephews other relatives and friends.

     He was preceded in death by his parents, and infant sister; three brothers-in-law, James Brennan, Fred Clark and John Lambert; aunts and uncles.

     Funeral services were at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington with Father Bart Timmerman officiating.   Burial was held at Blake’s Prairie Cemetery, Bloomington Township.  Family and friends were welcome from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, February 16, 2009 and from 9:00 a.m. until time of services Tuesday all at the church.  In lieu of flowers and plants, a Donald G. Marshall Scholarship fund has been established for the Bricklaying School at Southwest Technical School in Fennimore.


Robert H. Marshall

     Robert H. Marshall, age 82, of Prairie du Chien, formerly of Bagley, died on Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at Prairie Maison in Prairie du Chien.  He was born on May 16, 1926, in Little Grant Township, WI, the son of Lee and Esther (McQuistion) Marshall.  Bob attended school in Glass Hollow.  He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Bob was a riverboat pilot and worked for River Valley Barge Lines for 40 years.  He liked heavy equipment and, after retiring, he enjoyed working on a metal lathe at his shop in Bagley.  Bob was a member of the Liscum Brothers American Legion Post # 482 of Bagley.  He enjoyed socializing with his friends and loved his dog, “Tigger.”

     He is survived one sister, June Sylvester, Bagley; one brother, Bill Marshall, Bagley; and many nieces and nephews

     He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers:  Lee Telford and LaVern, Russell, and Merle Marshall; and his sister, Fern Knapp

      Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 31, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at Bagley United Methodist Church with Reverend Mary Ann Floerke officiating.  Burial with military honors was in Bagley Cemetery.  Friends called from 9:30 until the time of services at the church on Thursday. 


Tara A. Marshall

Tara Ann (Rooney) Marshall, age 32, of Bloomington, died on Sunday, July 18, 2010 as the result of an accident at her home in Bloomington. 

Funeral Services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 22, 2010 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington with Rev. John Meinholz officiating.  Burial was held in Nagle-Union Cemetery in Patch Grove Township.  Friends were welcome from 4:00 until 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 21 and from 10:00 a.m. until time of services all at the church.  Martin Funeral Home in Bloomington is serving the family.

Tara was born on July 22, 1977 in Prairie du Chien, WI, the daughter of Greg and Cindy (Jelinek) Rooney.  In 1991, the family moved from Gotham, WI to Patch Grove, WI.  While in school, she enjoyed playing volleyball, cheerleading and being on the dance team.  Tara was even asked to participate in dancing for the Queen in London, England in 1993.  She graduated from West Grant High School in 1995 and continued her education at S.W.T.C. in Fennimore and graduated in 1997 with an associate’s degree in Business Administration.  Tara was currently employed at Wisconsin State Correctional Facility in Prairie du Chien as the Warden’s personal confidential secretary.

Tara is survived by her children:  Tayler and Tamerik Marshall, Bloomington and their father, Troy Marshall, Woodman; her parents, Greg and Cindy Rooney, Patch Grove; three siblings:  Seth (Bridget) Rooney, Chippewa Falls, Miranda (Mike) Schramm, Lancaster and Grant (Tricia Walsh) Rooney, Prairie du Chien; nieces and nephew:  Jayden, Emma and Mazie Schramm; her Grandmother, Ramona Jelinek.

She was preceded in death by her Grandmother and Grandfathers, Alice Rooney, Francis Rooney and LaVerne Jelinek.


Jill M. Mason

Jill Marie Mason, age 58, of Glen Haven, died on Wednesday, December 21, 2011, surrounded by her family at Meriter Hospital in Madison. She was born on June 18, 1953, in Lancaster, the daughter of Melvin and Ruth (Brown) Mason. She enjoyed watching “The Price is Right” and the“Lawrence Welk Show.” Jill also enjoyed going for car rides, horses, and root beer floats. She loved spending time with her family and attending any party.

Survivors include her sisters: Doris Clevidence, Madison; Shirley Meier, Glen Haven; Virginia (Dean) Ziegler, Sun Prairie; Linda (Duane) Hoffman, Bloomington; her brother, Jack (Patty) Mason, Glen Haven;and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Jill was preceded in death by her brothers, Clive “Pete” (Catherine) Mason, Stan and Gene Mason; two brothers-in-law: Morris Clevidence and Lavern Meier; a nephew, Rod Ziegler and a niece, Mary Clevidence.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 28, 2011, at 12:00 noon at the United Methodist Church in Bloomington with Pastor Mary Ann Floerke officiating. Burial was in Blakes Prairie Cemetery, Bloomington. Family and friends called on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the church. Martin Funeral Home in Bloomington is assisting the family.


Barbara A. Martens

Barbara A. “Barb” Martens, of Platteville, died on Saturday, December 17, 2011, at her residence in Platteville, at age 64. Barb was born on June 15, 1947, in Dubuque, IA, the daughter of William G. and Carol (Drury) Nabbefeld. She graduated from Platteville High School in 1965, which she remembered proudly. Barb was married to Robert James Martens Jr., on Sept. 7, 1968, in Platteville at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She worked at the Platteville Telephone Company as a telephone operator and did toll investigation work from 1965 to August 1968. She also worked part time taking appointments at Bernard Allen Salon when they first opened. After living in Madison for a year when she was first married, they moved back to Platteville, where she was employed at Heiser Hardware as a clerk and bookkeeper. She then worked as an Optical Assistant for Family Vision Care and for Platteville Eye Associates for 12 years altogether. She had many fond memories working as an Optical Assistant. In later years she provided daycare services for several children and loved each of them dearly. Children were always close to her heart especially, Matthew, Christa, Kaylie, Grace & Noah. Barb’s favorite things in life were her family, her children, her friends, Christmas, the Moon, a good snowstorm, decorating for all the holidays, cooking and doing nice things for other people. She was a long time member of St. Mary’s Church in Platteville. Barb’s faith was very important to her. Barb was a very special Nana and loved all of her family very much.

Barb is survived by her husband, Robert J. Martens, Jr. of Platteville; her two children, daughter, Laura (Greg) Richardson of Verona, WI, and son, Corey (Dianna) Martens of Raleigh, NC; her mother, Carol Nabbefeld, Platteville; five grandchildren, Katie Richardson and Derek Richardson, both of Verona, WI, and Grey Martens, Ella Martens, and Sydney Martens, all of Raleigh, NC; a brother, Craig Nabbefeld, of Cross Plains, WI; a sister, Karen (Wells) Laszewski of Cross Plains, WI; nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, William G. Nabbefeld.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 21, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Platteville with Father Jon Del-Priorea officiating. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery, Platteville. Family and friends called on Tuesday, December 20, 2011, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Martin Schwartz Funeral Home in Platteville and on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home. At Barb’s request, in lieu of flowers and plants, memorials can be directed to the St. Mary’s Catholic School in Platteville.


Clayton A. Martin

Clayton A. Martin, age 76, of Lancaster, died on Tuesday, January 4, 2011, at Orchard Manor Nursing Home in Lancaster.  He was born on June 23, 1934, the son of Arthur and Elva (Ellis) Martin.  Clayton married Dorothy B. Hardy on June 27, 1952, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Platteville.  After their marriage, he farmed, drove milk tuck and worked for the Montfort Telephone Company.  From 1957 until 1959, he was stationed in Germany in the United States Army.  Clayton was later employed at Farmer’s Telephone Company in Lancaster.  He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and antique tractors.  Clayton and Dorothy loved to square dance together.  In 1970, he received his diploma from the National Radio Institute and was licensed as a Ham Radio Operator.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy Martin, Lancaster; a daughter: Vicky (Mark) Schweitzer; two grandchildren:  Jodi Schweitzer and Shane Schweitzer, all of Belmont; one brother, Brenton (Joan) Martin; two nephews, Wayne (Bea) Martin and Merle (Tammy) Martin, all of Lancaster; a sister-in-law, Mildred Kelly, Dubuque, IA.

Clayton was preceded in death by his parents and many members of the Hardy family.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 8, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster with Pastor Barbara Cook officiating.  Burial with military honors was held in Farview Cemetery, Liberty Township.  Family and friends called on Saturday, January 8, 2011, from 9:00 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.


Darrel L. Martin

     Darrel L. Martin, age 84, of Bagley, died on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 at the Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Tomah.  He was born on February 22, 1925, in Waterloo Township, the son of Otto “Red” and Anita “Knight” (Slaght) Martin.  In November of 1956, he was united in marriage to Ellen C. Whitaker in Dubuque, IA

       Darrel served in the U.S. Army in WWII, including the D-Day invasion, the battle of France and Belgium and was wounded in Limburg, Germany.  He received two purple hearts and was a member of DAV in Lancaster.  Darrel was a patrolman for Patch Grove Township for many years.

       He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ellen; and a sister, Doris Jenkins.

       He is survived by his cousins:  Roger (Linda) Martin, Greg (Stacy) Martin and Kristi (Tom) Gildersleeve, all of Lancaster; a brother-in-law, Richard Jenkins, Morrison, IL; Alvin Joyner, Linden; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

       Graveside services with Military Honors were held on Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. at Nagle Cemetery, Patch Grove Township. 

  

Elizabeth J. Martin

Elizabeth J. Martin, age 83 died Monday September 26, 2011. She was born August 28, 1928 the daughter of Melvin and Nellie (Derr) Kopp. Joan attended Stitzer grade school and graduated from Fennimore High School in 1947. She married Brenton L. Martin on January 3, 1948 at the Peace Lutheran Church in Platteville. Together they farmed in Liberty Township. Joan was a member of the Oak Hill Climbers homemakers club and the Victory View 4-H club.

Surviving is her husband, Brenton, two sons: Wayne (Bea) and Merle( Tami) all of Lancaster; her grandchildren, Shawn (Rachael) Martin, Sara (Chad) Martensen and Matthew Martin. Her great-grandchildren: Samantha and Jesse Martin and Kayci Jo and Hanna Martensen; sisters: Betty Place and Joyce Reiter of Platteville, sisters-in-law Darlene Kopp and Dorothy Martin of Lancaster, and many nieces & nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, mother & father-in-law, Arthur and Elva (Ellis) Martin, brother, Richard Kopp, brothers-in-law, Milton Place, Earl Gehrke, Jack Reiter, and Clayton Martin

Funeral Service were held on Friday, September 30, 2011 at 11:00 am at Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster with Pastor Barbara Cook officiating. Burial was in the Farview Cemetery, Liberty Township. Friends called on Thursday, September 29, 2011, from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster and from 10:00am until time of service on Friday.


Jack A. Martin

Jack A. Martin, age 69, of Cassville, died on Sunday, June 26, 2011, at his home in Cassville. He was born on February 2, 1942, in Linden, the son of Edwin and Leeta (Johnston) Martin.

Graveside services were held on Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at 10:30 a.m. at Hermitage Cemetery, Mt. Hope Township.  Martin Funeral Home in Cassville is assisting the family.


Kenneth Martin

Kenneth E. Martin, age 87, died Sunday, October 30 at Bluff Haven Assisted Living Center in Prairie du Chien. He was born September 26, 1924 on Blake’s Prairie between Bloomington and Bagley. The son of Roy and Ada (Harris) Martin, Kenneth always felt proud and privileged to grow up on the family homestead with his brothers, sister, and cousins; playing baseball, raising his family and farming the land that he loved. In April 1948, Kenneth and Arvis (Reukauf) were united in marriage at the Mt. Hope United Methodist Church . The couple farmed near Bagley where they raised 6 children. In his youth, he loved playing baseball with his cousins and good friends. He also enjoyed bowling as time allowed him from his busy life as a young farmer and family man. Kenneth was a lifetime member of the Bloomington United Methodist church where he served in many positions as well as on the church board. He also served as a director of the Farmer’s Co-op Board, on the Grant Electric Board for a term, was a 4-H leader for the Blake’s Prairie Bombers, and was president of the Grant County Pork Producers for several years.

His most treasured role in his life was being a loving husband, father, brother, and adoring grandfather. While his love of the land called Blake’s Prairie never wavered, he dearly loved his family and dedicated his life to them. He was also an avid fan of sports, particularly the sports that his grandchildren played.

Survivors include his wife, Arvis Martin, Bagley; their six children: Marsha Martin, Rockford, IL; Brenda (Roger) Berg, Evansville; Randy (Debbie) Martin, Bagley; Ross (Sandy) Martin, Houston, MN; Rod (Susie) Martin, Brooklyn; Carolyn (Tom) Doering, Oregon; twelve grandchildren; Stephanie (Jay) Thomsen, Madison; Katie (Chris) Davis, Wisconsin Dells; Jacob Martin, La Crosse; Kara, Erin, and Kirk Martin, Bagley; Mariah, Taylor, and Anna Marie Martin, Brooklyn; Drew, Tyler, and Lexi Doering, Oregon; three step grandchildren; Jason, Lindsey, and Dustin Reggin; brother Richard “Bud” (Patty) Martin, Bloomington; sister-in-law LaVonne Martin, Shannon, IL; brother-in-law Jim Sass, Bloomington; and many caring cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

In addition to his parents, Kenneth was preceded in death by a brother, Keith Martin; a sister, Doris (Martin) Sass; father-in-law, Ralph Reukauf; mother-in law, Helen Reukauf; and grandson, Michael Berg.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at the Bloomington United Methodist Church with Pastor Maryann Floerke officiating. Burial was in Lumpkin Cemetery , Bloomington Township . Family and friends called on Wednesday, November 2, 2011 from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Bloomington and on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at 11:00 a.m.


Sharon L. Martin

     Sharon L. Martin, age 58, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 16, 2009, at Orchard Manor, rural Lancaster, surrounded by loved ones.  She was born on April 28, 1951, in Lancaster, the daughter of Carl and Genelda (Pierce) Martin.  Sharon worked and attended workshops at the Hodan Center in Mineral Point and Southwest Opportunities Center in Lancaster.  She enjoyed bowling, Special Olympics and attending Badger Camp.  Sharon also loved to cut out coupons, collecting key chains and mugs.  She had attended Grace Lutheran Church in East Dubuque, IL.

       Sharon is survived by her mother, Genelda Krafjack, Lancaster; three sisters and one brother:  Shirley (Doug) Orr, Prairie du Sac, Connie (Danny) Hamilton, Albuquerque, NM, Dyke (Joan) Martin, Hazel Green and Patty (fiancé, Phil Beckman) Kehoe, Dubuque, IA; two half-sisters and one half-brother:  Terri (Ronald) Abing, Lancaster, Kim (Chuck Abing) Martin, Lancaster and Allen (Stacey) Martin, Mt. Hope; her dog, Pee Wee; many loving aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews.

       She was preceded in death by her father, Carl; her step-father, Richard “daddy” Krafjack; her grandparents; her brother-in-law, Rudy Trujillo and an uncle, Clarence Stoney.

       Funeral services were held on Monday, October 19, 2009, at 11:30 a.m. at Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster with Pastor Andrew Oppedahl officiating.  Burial was held in the Cassville Cemetery.  Friends called on Monday, October 19 from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.  In lieu of plants and flowers, a Sharon L. Martin memorial fund has been established.

       Sharon’s family would like to thank Orchard Manor, Grant County Hospice and Homeward Bound for the wonderful care and compassion they provided.


Beverly Ann McCabe

     Beverly Ann McCabe, age 77, of Platteville , WI passed away on November 13, 2009, at Southwest Health Center  following an extended illness.

     Beverly was born August 3, 1932 to Georgina and Kenneth Hudson in Galena , IL .  She moved to Platteville as a young girl and graduated from Platteville High School in 1951.  She was the editor of the PHS Yearbook and newspaper.  Her passion for writing would later inspire her journalism career.  Beverly was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart, Clifford Charles McCabe on June 9, 1951 at St. Mary’s Church in Platteville.  She raised six children temporarily putting her career on hold.   After the youngest was several years old, Beverly began her 31 year career writing feature stories, local news, and the recipe column for the Platteville Journal.  Over the years she met many interesting people and enjoyed creating the stories that would be published twice a week.  She had a gift, taking her notes from the interview process, weaving the story while typing on her typewriter.  Whether she was writing a story on someone’s hobby, on a new business in the local area, or on a heart breaking medical journey, she was able to put that special touch on the storyline and make an everlasting impression to the subject of her stories.  Her favorite writings included the series done at Christmas, for needy families.  She felt these had a huge impact on the local community.  It is estimated that Beverly wrote more than 7000 feature stories, highlighting the local area, over her career. She worked well passed the retirement age, finally retiring in 2002 due to failing health conditions.  She was a lifelong resident of Platteville, volunteered for the American Cancer Society where she served on the board of directors of the Grant County Cancer Society, and an active member of St. Mary’s Church.

     Her interests included playing Scrabble, playing euchre, card club, watching the Packers and Brewers with Clifford, family camping trips, and collecting Strawberry items.  She enjoyed the annual family vacation traveling throughout the United States , making many lasting memories.  Her favorite place to visit was Colorado .  Beverly was fond of searching for new recipes and entering recipe contests.  She was a five time winner in the Better Home and Garden’s “Cook of the Month” contest. 

     She is survived by her husband Clifford; her children, Pamela Ann (Larry) Wunderlin of Platteville, David (Maureen) of Galena, Tammie (William) VanNatta of Platteville, Angela (Craig) Bergan of Elkader IA, Dan (Debbi) of Watertown, and Amy (Duane) Austin of New Glarus;  twelve grandchildren – Joseph (Michele), Jeremiah (Angie), Sarah (Nick), Ryan (Melissa), Pollyanna (Michael), Emily (Brian), Cody, Krista, Calvin, Austin, Briana, and Hayley; and four great grandchildren – Ruby Ann, Ruby Olivia, Parker, and Madelyn.  She is further survived by her mother-in-law Julia McCabe, a brother Doug (Kathie) McPhail, a sister Sandy (Mike) Willis, a sister-in-law Arlene VanNatta, a brother-in-law Jerry (Connie) McCabe and many other relatives.

     She was preceded in death by her mother and father, her step-father Donald McPhail, and her father-in-law Joseph McCabe.

     Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Platteville with Monsignor Charles Schluter officiating.  Burial was held in Calvary Cemetery , Platteville.  Family and friends were welcome from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, November 16 at Martin Schwartz Funeral Home in Platteville and on Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services at the church.

Mary Beth McCann

Mary Beth McCann, age 50, of Potosi, died on Saturday, June 26, 2010, at her home.  She was born on April 13, 1960, in Viroqua, the daughter of Charlie and Margaret (Dorsey) McCann.  She was the youngest of ten children.  She was a beloved mother and grandmother.  Mary Beth lived in Potosi with her fiancé, Sam.  With an avid love for animals, their farm quickly grew as did their family and love for one another.  Her desire was always to help people and always be there as a shoulder to cry on.  Mary Beth graduated from Southwest Technical College as a CNA in May 2010.  Sadly, her illness took her before she was able to use her abilities to their full potential.  As for the lives of those she touched, we will forever be grateful and will always hold a special place for her in our hearts.  Mary Beth will be missed, but not forgotten.

Survivors include her daughter, Samantha and grandson, Charlie; her fiancé, Sam Reynolds and his daughters, Rachael and Andrea; her sister, Carolyn, and her bothers: Pat, Nub, Bill, Tim, Joe, Mike and Tom.

A Celebration of Life was held on Friday, July 2, 2010, from 12:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Sime’s Funeral Home, 106 S. 4th Street, Reedstown, WI.  Burial will be at a later date.  In lieu of plants and flowers, a Mary Beth McCann Memorial Fund has been established.  Martin Funeral Home in Potosi assisted the family.


Susan M. McCartney

Susan M. (Huser) McCartney, age 56, of Onalaska, formerly of Bagley, passed away on Friday, April 2, 2010, at Mulder Health Care Center in West Salem.  She was born on July 6, 1953, in Prairie du Chien, the daughter of Lawrence and Geraldine (Stram) Huser.  Susan attended grade school in Bagley, St. Mary’s Academy in Prairie du Chien and graduated from West Grant High School in May of 1971.  On September 18, 1971, she was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart Harry E. McCartney at St. John’s Catholic Church in Patch Grove.  To this union, three little angels were born, Scott (1973), Yvette (Oct. 9-Oct. 10 1974), and Regina (June 7, 1976 – August 1976).  She became the mother of a special little boy from South Korea named Christopher Hwan in 1985.  Sue loved life and was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.  She volunteered at LaCrosse Lutheran and worked at Ray-O-Vac in Fennimore and McDonald’s in Onalaska until her illness prevented her activities.  

Survivors include her husband, Harry McCartney, Onalaska; their son, Christopher (Jenny) McCartney, LaCrosse; and two grandchildren, Jordan and Kayli; her step-mother, Mary Metcalfe Huser, Bloomington; sisters-in-law:  Raleen (Fay) Schnitzler, Bagley; Laurayne (Lonny) Fischer, Boscobel; Jolinda (Robert) Waterman, Boscobel; Norma (Kevin) Weidemann, Prairie du Chien; Susan McCartney, Mt. Hope; brother-in-law, Vernon McCartney, Osseo; several nieces and nephews; her uncles: Gerald (Lorraine) Stram, Clifford (Barb) Stram, Clem (Jackie) Stram, all of Prairie du Chien;  her aunts: Marilyn (Joe) Huser, Bagley; Helen Huser-French, Green Bay; two step-brothers and a step-sister: Henry Huser, formerly of Bagley; William Huser, Prairie du Chien; and Mary Huser, formerly of Bagley.

Susan was preceded in death by her grandparents, parents, three children: Scott, Yvette, and Regina, and her mother and father-in-law, Vernon and Leona McCartney.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 6, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Patch Grove with Father William Seipp officiating.  Burial was at a later date.  Family and friends called on Monday, April 5, 2010, from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church and from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the church.  Martin Funeral Home in Bloomington is assisting the family. 


LaVern McClain

     LaVern McClain, 91, of rural Cornelia, died Saturday, February 2, 2008 at his home.

     Services were at 2:00 p. m. Wednesday, February 6, 2008 at Cornelia United Church of Christ, Cornelia, with Rev. Catherine Carlson presiding. Burial was in Mount Zion Cemetery, Cornelia.  Family and friends were welcomed from 1:00 p.m. until time of services Wednesday at the church.

     LaVern was born on January 15, 1917, on the family farm in rural Potosi, son of Arch and Ida Elizabeth (Kraiser) McClain. He married Ruth Marian McPherson on September 23, 1939 and remained on their rural Cornelia farm to the present.

     LaVern attended Sunnybrook Country School, graduated from Platteville High School, Platteville State Teachers College and taught public school for two years. Because of his love of the outdoors he then took up farming. He was a member of Mount Zion United Church of Christ, Cornelia. LaVern was an outfielder for the Cornelia softball team, a member of the Cornelia bowling team, and pit crewmember for the family racing team. For 50 years LaVern served as clerk for Paris Township.

     Two infant brothers, his brother George, two sisters, Violet Langkamp and Marie Wunderlin, preceded LaVern in death.

     Surviving family include his wife Marian; son Bruce and (Sue) of Saint Peter, MN; three grandchildren, Michael (Nancy) of Mankato, MN, Lisa (Maynard) Manthe of Mankato, David (Marie) of Potosi, and seven great-grandchildren; and brother Harold of Potosi.


Joseph E. McKeen, Jr.

     Joseph E.  “Buddy” McKeen Jr., age 73, of Bloomington died on Wednesday, August 27, 2008, at his home in Bloomington.  He was born on February 14, 1935 in Deming, New Mexico, the son of Joseph E. and Ruth (Slover) McKeen.  He married Veronica Murphy on November 10, 1973, and they resided in Lakewood California where he went to work and retired from McDonnell Douglas Aircraft in 2000.  They spent 15 years traveling and working in Asia before he retired in 2000 to Carlsbad, New Mexico

     They moved to Bloomington in 2004 to be nearer their youngest daughter Virginia (James) Neeley and their family. 

     Surviving are his wife Veronica, his two step daughters, Virginia (James) Neeley of Bloomington and Michelle Wilhelm of Elgin, Texas; 10 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren.

     Funeral services were held at St Mary's Catholic Church in Bloomington on September 03, 2008, at 6:00 PM with Father Bart Timmerman officiating.  Burial will be at a later date. 


Veronica T. McKeen

Veronica Theresa McKeen, age 71, of Bloomington, passed away at Orchard Manor Nursing Home on March 14, 2010.  She had been suffering from Lou Gehrig’s disease and finally was released to heaven to be free of the chains placed on her body.  Veronica was born on May 6, 1938, in Queens, New York, the daughter of Joseph and Marie (Graham) Murphy.   She attended Catholic School in Queens.  Veronica loved the west and she loved to travel.  Her first venture was when she ran away from home at age 16 and she was found at Churchill Downs race track in Kentucky.  She then moved to Arizona at 18 where she actually worked on a cattle ranch as a farm hand and went on real round ups.  She also served in the Marine Corps Reserve as a young woman in San Diego, California.   She had a massive stroke at 25 years old and re-taught herself to do everything from talking to walking.  She was able to travel the world with her second husband, Joseph, when they lived in Asia for 15 years.  She also had one very important best friend that was there for her through everything including her last battle named Kay Brubaker.  

 She is survived by two daughters, Virginia (James) Neeley of Bloomington, Wisconsin and Michelle Wilhelm of Pflugerville, TX.  She has 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren (12th one on the way). She had a niece, Virginia Shively from Florida that was more like a sister and life long friend as well.  She also has much family, sister-in-laws, nieces, nephews and one brother, Kevin Murphy, in Long Island, New York.

 Her husband Joseph E. McKeen Jr. passed away in August of 2008.   She had 4 brothers and 2 sisters, 5 of which preceded her in death. 

 She had a spirit unmatched by anyone or anything and will be missed more than words can say by all who knew and loved her. She was a very incredible woman and was very much loved by her family and VERY well taken care of by the staff at Orchard Manor.  Martin Funeral Home of Bloomington is in charge of arrangements.  Memorial Services were held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington at 5:30 p.m. on March 25, 2010.


George McKinney

George Willis McKinney, age 81, of rural Bagley, passed away Sunday, February 27, 2011, at Orchard Manor in Lancaster.  He was born on June 5, 1929, in Patch Grove Township, the son of Boyd and Zelda (Willis) McKinney.  George graduated from Patch Grove High School in 1947.  On February 15, 1950, he was united in marriage to Veronica Vopelak at St. John’s Catholic Church, Prairie du Chien.  Together they farmed near Bagley.  To this union, three children were born:  Michael, Roger and Janelle.   Veronica died suddenly of an aneurysm on May 13, 1977, at age 47.

George’s era of farming spanned more than seventy years, starting as a little boy helping his dad work with horses, to buying the home farm in 1956 and adding adjacent land as it became available.  In 1977, George, Michael, and Roger formed the “McKinney Farms Corporation,” and continued to work the family farm.  They received awards and recognition for the “Quality of Milk” and for “Outstanding Work in Soil and Water Conservation.”

George was a longtime member of St. John’s Catholic Church, Patch Grove, serving in various offices.  He was an elected officer on the AMPI Board and a director for the Grant-Crawford Co-Op.  He also served sixteen years as a trustee on the Wyalusing Township Board.  On October 26, 1979, George and Lillian (Fralick) Schnering were united in marriage at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington.  They recently celebrated their 31st Wedding Anniversary.

Everyone who knew George will remember his good natured personality, his ability to think things through, and to know exactly how each job should be done, his love for card playing, music, dancing and square dancing.  For several years, George and Lillian enjoyed spending the winter months in southern Texas.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian McKinney; children: Michael (Donna) McKinney; Roger (Judy) McKinney, all of Bagley; Janelle (Greg) Crubel, Bloomington; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his sister, Carol Carroll; sisters and brothers-in-law:  Mary McKinney, Rockford, IL; Phyllis (Roger) Osterhaus, Bloomington; Edward (Judy) Vopelak, Janesville; Richard (Margaret) Vopelak, North Carolina; nieces and nephews.  He is further survived by step-children: Richard (Carol) Schnering, Roger (Brenda) Schnering, all of Cassville; Donald (Vicky) Schnering, Lehr, ND; step-grandchildren and step-great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Veronica, George was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth, his sister, Myrna McKinney Welsh; brothers-in-law: Donald Welsh, Charles “Red” Carroll, Edward, Lawrence, Robert, and Floyd “Bud” Fralick; sisters-in-law: Elsie Drew and Geneva Picha.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 5, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington with Father John Meinholz officiating.  Burial was at a later date.  Family and friends called on Friday, March 4, 2011, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington, where a 3:45 p.m. scripture service will be held.  Friends also called on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the church.  Martin Funeral Home in Bloomington assisted the family.  In lieu of plants and flowers, a George W. McKinney memorial fund has been established.


Edward J. McNamara

Edward J. “Ed” McNamara, age 93, of Lancaster, died Saturday December 24, 2011 at Grant Regional Health Center in Lancaster.

Services were at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 29, 2011 at St. Clement Catholic Church, Lancaster, with Rev. Greg Lucey, S.J. and Rev. William Seipp officiating. Burial with military honors was in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bloomington, Wisconsin. Friends called on Wednesday December 28, 2011 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster.

Ed was born on June 24, 1918, the son of James and Nora (Lucey) McNamara, in the Township of Seneca, Crawford County, Wisconsin. He attended rural country school and graduated from Seneca High School. On October 14, 1941, Ed married Catherine Mergen at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington, Wisconsin. Catherine predeceased him on November 13, 1970. On October 6, 1976, he married Marie Heying at Nativity Catholic Church, Dubuque, Iowa.

Upon completion of high school, in 1937, he began employment with his uncle, G. C. Lucey, who owned and operated a John Deere dealership with stores at Bagley and Ferryville, Wisconsin. On February 1, 1940, he became employed by John Deere Plow Co., Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as a block man covering the Portage, Wisconsin territory.

Ed entered the United States Army on November 1, 1942. He served 26 months overseas in the European Theater of Operation with the John Deere Battalion. Ed was discharged with the rank of First Sergeant. Upon his discharge he entered into partnership with his uncle Greg Lucey, in a business known as G.C. Lucey & Company, a John Deere dealership at Bagley, Wisconsin. In the 1950's, Ed founded what was later to be known as the Farmers Implement Company at Bloomington, Wisconsin. In 1960, he sold his interest in Farmers Implement Company and moved to Lancaster, Wisconsin, where he then founded E.J. McNamara Real Estate & Auction Service. He retired after 42 years as an auctioneer and real estate broker.

Ed served as the President of the Wisconsin Auctioneers Association and was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 1974. He served as the President of the Wisconsin Farm & Land Brokers and received national accreditation from the National Farm and Land Brokers Association. He was one of the founders and served as President of the Southwest Wisconsin Board of Realtors and received the Realtor of the Year award from the state Association. Ed was active in the Lancaster community, serving 22 years as a Director of the former Union State Bank; served as a member of the Board of the former Lancaster Memorial Hospital; served as a Trustee and Council Member of St. Clement’s Catholic Church; was a member of both the 3rd and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Council #2820; Charter member of Liscom Bros. Post 482 American Legion, Bagley, Wisconsin, and a life member of the VFW Post #2344 of Lancaster.

Surviving are his wife, Marie; two daughters, Noreen (Dan) Welte, Highland Ranch, Colorado; Mary (John) Pipal, Dodgeville; three sons: Robert (Jane) McNamara, Phoenix, Arizona; Patrick (Connie) McNamara and John (Rose) McNamara, both of Lancaster; seven grandchildren, Catherine (Nick) Cubik, Michael (Jill) McNamara, Ellen (Marcus) DeVere, Elizabeth McNamara, Brendan Pipal, Sara McNamara and Ryan McNamara; one great-grandchild, Jackson Cubik; a brother, Frank (Beverly) McNamara, Fitchburg; three sisters-in law Bernice Mergen, Patch Grove, Mary Ellen McNamara, Prairie du Chien; and Mary Mergen, Bloomington; and brother and sister-in-law John and Ida Maletta of Centerville, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Catherine; infant son, James; two brothers, Joseph and Daniel, and three sisters Marge Rubejsek, Mary Titlbach and Veronica Litchfield.

In lieu of flowers or other items of tribute, an Edward J. McNamara Memorial Fund has been established.


Jeffrey McPhail

Jeffrey J. McPhail, age 38, of Rewey, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, July 11, 2010 in Rewey.  He was born on March 11, 1972 in Dubuque , Iowa, the son of Douglas and Kathleen (Mask) McPhail.  Jeff worked as a self-employed contractor.

Jeff lived larger than life.  He liked the outdoors, music, cooking and eating.  Jeff loved his family, especially his daughters, grandson, and nephews, who were his godsons and his dog, Rocky. 

Jeff is survived by his parents:  Doug and Kathie McPhail, Platteville; two daughters:  Krystal Knox and Casey Ley; his grandson, Brayden Knox; his sister, Jennifer McPhail and her son, Wyatt King and his brother, Andrew and his son, Miles Hunter McPhail, both of Platteville; his girlfriend, Michelle Kemnitzer, Rewey; man’s best friend, Rocky Rey McPhail; six aunts and uncles:  Bob Mask, Santa Barbara, CA; Mike Mask, Las Vegas, NV; Bill (Anne) Mask, St. Paul, MN; Jane (Bob) Fowler, Platteville; Mike (Sandy) Willis, Platteville; and Clifford McCabe, Platteville; many cousins and friends.

He is preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents and two aunts:  Rita Mask and Beverly McCabe.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 17, 2010 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Platteville with Father Lope Pascual officiating.  Burial was in Calvary Cemetery , Platteville.  Family and friends were welcome from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 16 at Martin Schwartz Funeral Home in Platteville and from 9:30 a.m. until time of services Saturday at the church. 


Suzanne L. Meir

      Suzanne “Suzie” L. Meir, age 76, of rural Lancaster, passed away on Sunday, November 29, 2009 at home after a year long battle with brain cancer.  She was born March 18, 1933, the daughter of Leon “Ole” and Pauline “Polly” (Grant) Loy in Annaton, WI.  Suzie married Frank A. Meir on September 12, 1952 at the Methodist Church in Livingston.  She farmed her entire life.  She also worked off the farm at the Loudspeaker Component, Pine Grove Motel, IGA Bakery and McDonald’s until retirement.  Suzie had many interests and gardening being the one she continued until this past year. 

       Suzie is survived by her eight children:  Laura, Barbara, Rose, Frank, John Meir all of Lancaster; Robert Meir, Boscobel, Diane Meir, Stewartville, MN and Ralph (Anna Davey) Meir, Superior, WI; her two brothers and two sisters:  Helen Thompson, Fennimore, Grant (Betty) Loy, Monfort, Rosalie (James) Kretchman, Fennimore and Abraham (Louise) Loy, Wesley Chapel, FL; a brother-in-law, John (Judy) Meir; many nieces and nephews.

       She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; her parents, Ole and Polly Loy and her mother and father-in-law, LeRoy and Lela (Richardson) Meir.

       Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, December 4, 2009 at Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster with Reverend Barb Cook officiating.  Burial was in Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster.  Visitation was held from 10:00 a.m. until time of services on Friday at the funeral home.


Marilyn J. Meister

     Marilyn J. Meister, age 69, of Patch Grove, died peacefully surrounded by family on Monday, December 14, 2009.  She was born on May 27, 1940 in Racine, WI, the daughter of Frank Anthony and Johanna Theresa (Holler) Scholzen.  On May 27, 1961, she was united in marriage to Bernard J. Meister at Holy Name Parish in Racine, WI.  He preceded her in death on April 18, 2004.   Marilyn was a beautiful homemaker, reliable school bus driver, loving Grandmother, and caring, lifelong friend.  She enjoyed 28 years as a school bus driver at West Grant/River Ridge.  Hobbies included grandchildren, various collections (especially angels), and writing for the Grant Herald Independent.  She had a ready smile for everyone.

     Marilyn was a devout Catholic and enjoyed being a member of both St. Mary’s and St. John’s Parishes.  She was active in her Church and Community as a member of: Catholic Daughters of America – St. Teresa Court # 1006; Council of Catholic Women (served as Grant Deanery President); West Grant Lioness Club; and American Legion Auxiliary Grey-Wachter Murphy #229 (she held all offices for the Legion at both local and county levels).  Marilyn led the Rosary before Mass and was a Prayer Partner to students at St. Mary’s School.

       Marilyn is survived by seven children:  Bernard John (Darlene), Peculiar, MO; Laurie Jean Foege, Madison; David (Danielle) Meister, Darlington; Libbey (Marcos) Ortiz Meister, Madison; Christopher (Kim) Meister, Cambridge; Robert (Heidi) Meister, St. Peters, MO; and William (Michelle) Meister, Sun Prairie; 14 grandchildren:  Briana; Max Foege; Johanna Regina, Jared, Judith, and Josie; Emilio, Rafael, and Marilyn Anastacia; Samantha and Cassandra; Alan and Anne; Kristianna; brother, Francis Scholzen, Racine; in-laws; nieces; nephews; cousins.

       She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Bernard; her youngest son, Frank Lawrence; brothers, Gerald and Richard; her sister, Elizabeth Catherine and her dog, Sydney.

       Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 17, 2009, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington with Father Bart Timmerman officiating.  Burial was held in Union Nagle Cemetery, Town of Patch Grove.  Visitation was from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 16 with a Rosary Service at 2:30 and Women’s Auxiliary Service at 2:50 and from 10:00 a.m. until time of services Thursday all at the church.  Martin Funeral Home in Bloomington assisted the family.

       In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to: St. Mary’s School, West Grant Lion’s Club, Diabetes Association, Hospice, or Multiple Sclerosis Society.  


Pearl H. Menne

     Pearl H. Menne, age 71, of Tennyson, passed away on Thursday, June 11, 2009 at her home surrounded by her family.  She was born on July 15, 1937, the daughter of Maynard and Irene (Slaats) Pluemer in Tennyson.  Pearl graduated from St. Andrew High School in Tennyson in 1955.  She was united in marriage to Cyril Menne on August 7, 1956 at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Tennyson.  Together they resided in Tennyson and raised six children.  Pearl was an active member of St. Andrew including CCW and numerous other volunteer services.  She liked to quilt, play cards, enjoyed making barbeque and caramel dumplings for her family.

       Pearl is survived by her husband, Cyril, Tennyson; five children:  Connie (Bob) Brady, Renee’ Menne, Kevin (Rhonda) Menne and Karla (Chuch) Oyen all of Potosi and Kim (Allen) Kammerude, Dubuque; 11 grandchildren:  Rick, Cody, Cole and Cy Menne; Josh, Teresa and Keith Oyen; Krista and Emily Langkamp; and Carley and Denver Kammerude; one great-grandson, Lucas Oyen; two step-grandchildren, Bobby and James Brady; one step-great-grandson, James Brady, Jr.; four sisters:  Darlene Brown, Ripon, Glendoris (Eldon) Lynch, Platteville, Janet (Don) Schmitt, Sherrill, IA and Pat (Jim) Loeffelholz, Cuba City; many nieces and nephews.

       She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Beth; a brother, Dennis Pluemer and a sister, Estelle Schroeder.

       Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 15, 2009 at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Tennyson with Father Richard Leffler officiating.  Burial was held in St. Andrew Cemetery, Tennyson.  Family and friends were welcome on Sunday, June 14, 2009 from 2:00 until 6:00 p.m. with Prayer Service at 4:00 p.m. and on Monday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services all at the church.    In lieu of flowers and plants a Pearl H. Menne Memorial Fund has been established.  Martin Funeral Home in Potosi served the family. 


Rosalia T. Menne

     Rosalia “Rosie” T. Menne, age 95, formerly of Potosi, died Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at Orchard Manor in rural Lancaster.  She was born on October 22, 1913 in Jamestown Township, WI the daughter of Peter and Anna (Wiegman) Wiederholt.  Rosalia married Leo Menne on February 23, 1949 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Kieler.  He preceded her in death on March 16, 1976.  Together they farmed for many years near Potosi.  Rosalia was a member of St. Andrew – Thomas Catholic Church and was a member of the Altar Society.  She also volunteered in many of the church activities.  Rosalia was also was a member of the Happy Quilters Club in Potosi and enjoyed gardening.

       Rosalia is survived by her daughter, Rita (John) Simonsen, Pardeeville; one sister,  Sister Leota Wiederholt, Milwaukee; one brother, Leonard Wiederholt, Dubuque; many nieces and nephews.

      She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leo; a son and daughter in infancy; two brothers, Hilary and Cletus Wiederholt and two sisters, Sister Ann Petrine and Germaine Loeffelholz.

       Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2009 at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Tennyson with Father Richard Leffler officiating.  Burial was held in St. Andrew Cemetery, Tennyson.  Family and friends were welcome from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 20, 2009 at Martin Funeral Home in Potosi and from10:00 a.m. until time of services Saturday at the funeral home.


Ambrose G. Mergen

Ambrose G. Mergen, age 77, of Bloomington, passed away on Saturday, October 29, 2011, at Grant Regional Health Center in Lancaster. He was born on March 24, 1934, in Bloomington, the son of Mike and Lena (Moris) Mergen.  Ambrose attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and Bloomington High School.  On June 7, 1954, he was united in marriage to Barbara Barr at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington.  Ambrose farmed all of his life and operated a trucking business for a short time.  Ambrose enjoyed cooking and baking, especially his prize winning pies.  He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, attending cattle shows, going to Ma’s Bakery, and following his grandchildren’s sporting events.  Ambrose was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington, the Holy Name Society, the Blake’s Prairie Fair Board and supported the FFA and 4-H programs.

Survivors include his loving wife, Barbara Mergen, Bloomington; their six children:  Susan (Robert) Bernhardt, Cassville; Steve (friend Julie Mumm) Mergen, Glen Haven; Terry (Jean) Mergen, Bloomington; Christine (Edward) Laufenberg, Mt. Hope; Tamie (Tom) Hoffman, Bloomington; Pam (Charles) Frank, Hazel Green; fifteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild on the way; his sister and brothers:  Herbert (Betty) Mergen, Bloomington; Joe (Verna) Mergen, Cassville; Bernadette (Robert) Parkins, Bloomington; Michael (Janet) Mergen, Platteville; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

In addition to his parents, Ambrose was preceded in death by an infant son, a brother, John William, a sister, Rosemary Elskamp, father-in-law, Frank Barr and mother-in-law, Elva (Noble) Barr.

Mary V. Metcalfe

Mary V. Metcalfe, age 88, of Bloomington, died on Thursday, May 20, 2010, at Prairie Maison nursing home in Prairie du Chien.  Mary was born on July 5, 1921, in Glen Haven Township, the second daughter of Clyde and Viola (Kuenster) Orr.  She married Robert J. Metcalfe on February 17, 1942.  Bob served in the United States Navy as a ship’s medic as war was raging in Europe and in the Pacific. He was later stationed at St. Albans Hospital in New York.  In 1947, they purchased the Hoskins funeral home and furniture store in Bloomington.  In the years following, with the help of his friend and partner, Dale Kuenster, additional funeral homes in Cassville, Lancaster, and Potosi were purchased and became Metcalfe-Kuenster Funeral Homes.  Mary was a member and volunteer at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington.  She also volunteered at St. Mary’s School.  She was an energetic presence in the community. Her favorite activities were traveling with Bob, golfing at the Prairie du Chien Country Club, bowling, quilting, knitting and boating with family and friends on the Mississippi River. Survivors include her daughter, Kathy (Steve) Derene, Madison and a son, Thomas (Peggy) Metcalfe, Eau Claire; her loving grandchildren:  Kelli Dauber, Erik (Wendi) Knodle, Jennifer Metcalfe, Casey Metcalfe, Carly Metcalfe, Michael Derene and Nick Derene; and great-grandchildren: McKenzie, Sydney, Emily, Austin and Taylor.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Robert in 1993, two daughters, Christy Lynn in infancy and Virginia Knodle, and her beloved sister, Helen (Allen) DiVall.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, May 25, 2010, at 12:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington with Father Bart Timmerman officiating. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bloomington.  Family and Friends called on Tuesday, May 25, 2010, from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the church.  Mary was a passionate supporter of environmental causes, particularly the effort to save the gray wolf.  Donations in her name can be made to the Yellowstone Association, P.O. Michael D. Miles

Michael D. Miles, age 50, of Lancaster, WI, passed away Friday, October 21, 2011, at his home, in the arms of his loving wife. Mike was born in Lancaster on December 13, 1960, the youngest son of nine children born to Stanley and Rosanna (Ertz) Miles.

Mike married the love of his life, Connie Oyen on April 17, 1982. For almost 30 years, they shared the love of farming together. The pride that Mike had in his farm was seen within his hard work, the hard work he taught his four children. Mike was a wonderful man with a gentle heart, and a smile that was contagious. We will miss his laughter and love. Mike loved the time he spent camping and the trips to Jamaica with family and friends.

Mike is survived by his loving wife, Connie; sons, Brandon of Hazel Green and Philip (fiancée Lyndsey) of Lancaster; daughters, Ashley (Mike) David of Potosi and Mallory of Lancaster; parents, Stanley & Rosanna of Lancaster; five brothers, David(Maria) of Blue River, Patrick (Diane) of Howards Grove, William (Pat), Kenny (Teri), and Ronnie (Carol), all of Lancaster; three sisters, Elaine (Jeff) Hartzell of Rock Springs, Theresa (Todd) Abing of Richland Center, and Mary Miles of Lancaster; father and mother in-law, Philip and Grace Oyen of Potosi; sister and brother in laws, Larry & LuAnn Fecht, Don & Lisa Oyen, Chuck & Karla Oyen, all of Potosi, David & Debbie Erie of Hillsboro, and Ron & Jane Harnage of Indy, IN; along with many nieces, nephews, and many other loving relatives and friends.

Mike was preceded in death by a Godson, Eric Miles, along with his maternal and paternal grandparents, Albert and Mildred Ertz, and Clarence and Lila Miles.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, October 26, 2011, at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster, with Father William Seipp officiating. Visitation was from 4 to 8 pm on Tuesday, October 25, at St. Clement Catholic Church, and one hour prior to the mass at church on Wednesday. Burial was in St. Clement Cemetery.  Schwartz Funeral Home in Lancaster is assisting the family.


George J. "Jr" Miller

George J. “Jr” Miller, age 87, of Bagley, died on Thursday, January 12, 2012, at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, Lancaster. He was born on August 3, 1924, in Wyalusing Township, the son of George and Velva (Dull) Miller. Jr was united in marriage to Janice J. Kirschbaum on June 11, 1945, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Patch Grove. Jr began his employment at the Brodtville Creamery. He and Janice moved to Savannah, IL, and he was employed at the Armory. Jr also worked at Dubuque Packing Company, farmed and later owned and operated the Dew Drop Inn for seventeen years. In 1990, they retired and moved to Bagley. Jr enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his children: Georgia Rieck, Prairie du Chien; Brenda (Gene) Loding, Ashland; Susan Ruhr, Prairie du Chien; Stephanie (Terry) Buffington, Bagley; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; a great-great grandson; one sister-in-law, Phyllis (Kenny) Tichenor, Prairie du Chien; other relatives and many friends.

In addition to his parents, Jr was preceded in death by his wife, Janice; a daughter, Cheryl (Robert) Haberichter and two sons-in-law, Bruce Rieck and Terry Clark.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 14, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Patch Grove with Father John Meinholz officiating. Burial was in the Bagley Cemetery. Janice J. Miller

      Janice J. Miller, age 82, of Bagley, died on Friday, September 4, 2009, at Prairie Maison in Prairie du Chien.  She was born on June 1, 1927, in Cassville, the daughter of Andrew and Elenora (Brinkman) Kirschbaum.  She married George “Jr” Miller on June 11, 1945, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Patch Grove.  Janice was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America and farmed with her husband.  Later they owned and operated the Dew Drop Inn for seventeen years.  In 1990 they retired and moved to Bagley.

     Survivors include her husband, Jr Miller, Bagley; four daughters:  Georgia (Bruce) Rieck, Prairie du Chien; Brenda (Gene) Loding, Ashland; Susan Ruhr, Prairie du Chien; Stephanie (Terry) Buffington, Bagley; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one sister, Phyllis (Kenny) Tichenor, Prairie du Chien; other relatives and many friends.

Irma M. Millin

Irma M. Millin, age 90, of Lancaster, went to meet her Heavenly Father on Sunday, May 9, 2010, at Morningside Assisted Living in Lancaster.  She was born on December 5, 1919, in Glen Haven, the daughter of Frank and Margaret (Hoffman) Hess.  On January 13, 1944, Irma was united in marriage to Donald Y. Millin in Sioux Falls, SD.  Irma farmed with her husband for several years before moving to Lancaster in 1955.  She worked as a housekeeper for many families and professional businesses in Lancaster for many years.  She also worked for the Lancaster Memorial Hospital and Orchard Manor for fifteen years.  Irma strived to help provide for her family to the best of her ability.  She enjoyed doing various activities, including volunteering at News and Views, quilting, visiting friends, bowling in her younger years, and enjoying a good fish fry on Friday nights.  Irma greatly enjoyed seeing her grandchildren and especially her great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter, Judith (James) Burbach, Kieler; her son, Michael D. Millin, Thornton, CO; a daughter-in-law, Deborah Millin, Mountain Top, PA; eight grandchildren: Lisa (Jeff) Kurt, Farley, IA; Kim (Mike) Kraus, Cuba City; Angie Burbach, Platteville; Sandy (Eric) Small, Dubuque, IA; Christopher (Jen) Teer, New Freedom, PA; Shanda (Bobby) Opsitos, Jr., Felton, PA; Randi (Seth) Robinson, Henryville, PA; Jazmine Millin, Boulder, CO; 13 great-grandchildren; her sister, Mildred Dietrich, Cassville; two sisters-in-law, Margaret Hess, Lancaster and Phyllis Millin, Tomah; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Irma was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Donald; a son, Randy, and her siblings, Arthur Hess, Armella Laufenberg, two nephews, six brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law.

Peggy A. (Pagel) Minch

Peggy A. (Pagel) Minch, age 58, of Lancaster, died on Saturday, June 25, 2011, at Grant Regional Health Center in Lancaster.  She was born on May 6, 1953, in Lancaster, the daughter of Herbert and Lucille (Peirce) Pagel.  Peggy graduated from Lancaster High School in 1971.  She was employed as a factory worker for several years.  Peggy was a member of the Bethlehem E&R Church and the Bloomington Sportsman’s Club.  She was an excellent marksman and loved sewing and crocheting.  Peggy enjoyed making Divinity and chocolate fudge during the holidays.  She was a good, caring person.  Peggy always had a smile on her face and had the ability to get along with anyone she met. 

Survivors include her brother, Gary (Sharon) Pagel, Lancaster, and her special friend, Donald “Donnie” Hampton, Lancaster.

Peggy was preceded in death by her parents.

Lucille M. Klein Mindham

     Lucille M. Klein Mindham, age 78, of Lancaster, died on Thursday, September 3, 2009, at her home in rural Lancaster.  She was born on April 29, 1931, in Platteville, the daughter of Fred and Mary (Hying) Lane.  She attended school at Dubuque, Iowa.  On August 6, 1973, Lucille was united in marriage to Fred J. Mindham.  She enjoyed fishing, gardening, and bead crafting.

       Survivors include her children:  Thomas (Janet) Klein, Bagley; Daniel (Linda) Klein, McGregor, IA; Karen Cooley, Patch Grove; Sharon (Nick) Sweeny, Patch Grove; Larry Klein, Bagley; Kathleen (Ricky) Clark, Prairie du Chien; 20 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; one sister, Carolyn Schultz, Prairie du Chien.

       Lucille was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Fred Mindham, and a brother, Jim Lane and a sister, Catherine Peterson.

Mary E. Misky

    Mary E. Misky, age 91, formerly of Platteville, died onTuesday, January 22, 2008 at Ingleside Nursing Home in Mt. Horeb.  She was born on February 17, 1916 in Dodgeville, the daughter of Carl and Mary Ann (Thies) Rock.  Mary married Ray C. Misky on October 2, 1939 Dodgeville.  Ray and Mary had just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary prior to Ray’s death in 1999. 

     Mary served for 30 years as the Treasurer/Finance Director for the City of Platteville.  For most of those years, she was the only elected female official in the City of Platteville.  She was elected first in 1948 and continued to serve until her retirement in 1978.  Prior to her election in 1948, she worked for the A & P Food Store and with the Kroger Company with her husband.  Her first job after graduating from Dodgeville High School was in the Knutson Law Office in Dodgeville.    

     She was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, regularly attending daily Mass.  For many years she baked for others and was selected several years ago in the Wisconsin State Journal as “Someone Who Made A Difference” for her efforts at calling on shut-ins.

     Mary is survived by a son, Chuck Misky of Mt. Horeb; four grandchildren:  Steve (Emily) Misky of Cuba City; Greg (Caren) Misky of Denver, CO; David (Lisa) Misky, Milwaukee and Anne Misky of Middleton. In addition to her grandchildren, she is survived by five great-grandchildren:  Jaime and Anna Misky of Milwaukee, Elizabeth and Jack Misky of Cuba City and Ava Pauline Misky of Denver.  She is further survived by her sister Margaret Rock of Dodgeville; her sister-in-law, Patricia Rock and brother-in-law, Ralph Evans both of Dodgeville as well as many nieces and nephews.

     She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray; her parents; brothers, Tony, Jack and Bob; sister, Joanne; two sisters-in-law, Kathryn Rock and Romelle Rock and daughter-in-law, Pauline Misky.

     A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 26, 2008 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Platteville with Msgr. Charles Schluter officiating.  Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Platteville.  Visitation was held on Friday, January 25 from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at Martin Schwartz Funeral Home in Platteville with a Parish Scripture Service at 4:00 p.m. Friends were also welcomed from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the church.  A Mary E. Misky Memorial Fund has been established.

 


James E. Mitsch

James E. Mitsch, age 75, of Bagley, died on Sunday, January 30, 2010, at his residence.  He was born on May 24, 1935, in Chicago, the son of James and Dorothy (Glasbrenner) Mitsch.  James attended school in Chicago and was employed with the union as a floor coverer for forty-fives years.  In 1973, James moved to Bagley.  He was an avid Chicago Bear and Cubs fan and loved reading, hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his children:  Tom (Beth ) Mitsch, McHenry, IL; Susan (James) Burke, Lake Geneva, WI; James (significant other, Dawn) Mitsch, McHenry, IL; Cindy (Rod) Rodriguez, Lindenhurst, IL; his step-children: John Dale (Debbie) Harris, Jr., Des Plaines; Theresa (John) Eisenminger, Darien; Matthew (Michelle) Harris, Garnavillo, IA; thirteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his sister, Joyce Hahnlein, McHenry, IL.

In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Mitsch.

Martha A. Mitsch

     Martha A. Mitsch, age 70, of Bagley, died on Thursday, September 25, 2008, at Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital, Prairie du Chien.  She was born on March 3, 1938, in Beloit, the daughter of Gene and Laura (Wright) Salisburg.  Martha was employed at the Bagley Hotel, Bagley.  In 1979, she was united in marriage to James E. Mitsch in Bagley.  Martha enjoyed cooking and taking care of her family.  She liked to play the slot machines in her spare time.

     In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by a daughter, Cyndy Bohringer, a grandson, Josiah Bohringer and a sister, Shirley Schmuck.

     Survivors include her husband, James Mitsch, Bagley; her children:  John Dale (Debbie) Harris, Jr., Des Plaines; Theresa (John) Eisenminger, Darien; Matthew (Michelle) Harris, Garnavello, IA; six grandchildren; brother and sisters: Richard (Sheila) Salisburg, Ohio; Nancy (Gary) Smith, Spencer; Janet (Don) Hubka, Clinton.

Brenda and Mark Moore

Mark C. Moore, age 53, and Brenda M. Moore, age 48, both of Wauzeka, died on Saturday, July 31, 2010, as a result of an automobile accident in Bloomington Township.  Mark was born on May 3, 1957, in Prairie du Chien, the son of Norbert and Marjorie (Kress) Moore.  Brenda was born on February 25, 1962, in Prairie du Chien, the daughter of Lyle and Helen (Purkapile) Potter.  They both graduated from Bloomington High School.  In 1980, Mark began his employment with 3M in Prairie du Chien.  On December 22, 1984, Mark and Brenda were united in marriage at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA.   Brenda was previously employed at Cabela’s in Prairie du Chien and enjoyed being a homemaker.  They loved traveling, hunting, fishing, and camping.  Mark and Brenda enjoyed anything that involved being together as a family.  Mark also enjoyed antique cars and playing the drums and Brenda loved to cook and care for her family.

Survivors include their children:  Kurt (Janet Dudak) Moore, Manchester, IA; Tanya (Robert Carr) Moore, Wauzeka; Mark’s parents, Marge and Norb Moore, Bloomington; Brenda’s mother, Helen Potter, Bloomington; Brenda’s siblings: Bev Teasley, Cabot, Arkansas; Mike (Karen) Potter, Potosi; Dave (Janice Beall) Potter, Cassville; Betty (Jerry Cromwell) Nelson, Cassville; Trudi Cromwell, Lancaster; and several nieces and nephews.

Mark and Brenda were preceded in death by a son, Jim Moore, Brenda’s father, Lyle Potter, and Brenda’s nephew, Clint Potter.

Funeral services were held on Friday, August 6, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington with Reverend Mary Ann Floerke officiating.  Burial was in Linden Cemetery, Linden.  Family and friends called on Thursday, August 5, 2010, from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington and from 9:30 a.m. until time of services on Friday at the church.  In lieu of plants and flowers, a Mark and Brenda Moore memorial fund has been established.  Martin Funeral Home in Bloomington is assisting the family.


Marcia L. Moore

Marcia L. (Fuller) Moore, age 88, of Lancaster, died Friday, January 14, 2011, at the Lancaster Care Center after an extended illness.  She was born on December 8, 1922, in Lancaster, the daughter of John A. and Thelma (Leighty) Fuller.  Marcia grew up in the Lancaster and Beetown area.  She was employed with the Lancaster Community School District in the kitchen for many years.  Marcia was a member of the Beetown Gospel Hall

Memorial Services were held Wednesday, January 19, 2001, at 10:00 a.m. at the Lancaster Care Center Chapel.  Private family burial was in the Hillside Cemetery, Lancaster.  A time of remembrance was held directly following the memorial service.  Martin Funeral Home in Lancaster is assisting the family.


Paul M. Moore

Paul M. Moore, age 69, of Lancaster, died on Tuesday, May 3, 2011, at UW Hospitals in Madison.  He was born on June 21, 1941, in Slabtown, the son of Harley and Leone (Ames) Moore.  On June 15, 1963, Paul was united in marriage to Alice LaMere at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster.  Paul was a very busy man who didn’t sit still for very long.  He thoroughly enjoyed his family.  His four children and his grandchildren were his pride and joy.  Paul enjoyed time spent at the holidays and attending the various events for his grandchildren.  He will miss his Ma’s Bakery Crew with whom he spent nearly every Saturday morning gathering for coffee and breakfast with his son, Derek.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Alice Moore; daughter, Paula (Steve) Landon,  Zach, Jen, and Brent; daughter, Susan (Paul) Zenz, Calvin, Nikki, Amanda and Phillip; daughter, Billiejo (Dan Hyer) Moore, John, Austin, Alysa; and son, Derek (Stephanie Pitzen) Moore, Trent and Sydney; extra special great-granddaughter, Malorie; sisters: Lorraine Klaas, Judy (Charlie) Kuenster, and Linda (Ted) Wilson; brothers: Allen (Mary), Harley “Joe” (Vivian), and Larry (Peg) Moore; sister-in-law, Jann (Terry) McCann; brothers-in-law, Jim (Sandy) LaMere and Gaylord LaMere; many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by his brothers: Jerry (Betty), Johnny (Evelyn) and Floyd Klaas; in-laws: Raymond, Ivanelle, and Dennis LaMere; niece and nephews, Dixie and Denny Lau, and Craig LaMere.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 7, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster with Father William Seipp officiating.  Burial was in St. Clement Cemetery, Lancaster.  Family and friends called on Friday, May 6, 2011, from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the church.


Ruth M. Moore

     Ruth M. Moore, age 98, of Lancaster, died on Tuesday, January 29, 2008, at the Lancaster Care Center, Lancaster.  She was born on August 11, 1909, in Iowa County, Wisconsin, the daughter of Harry and Grace (Richardson) McIntosh.  Ruth was united in marriage to Victor Moore on August 11, 1926, in Galena, IL.  Together they owned and operated Garrison Grove Cheese Factory in Dodgeville and Ideal Cheese Factory in Fennimore.  Later they operated Homer Cheese Factory in Hickory Grove Township.  In 1970, the couple retired and moved to Lancaster.  Ruth was a member of the Calvary Community Church in Lancaster.  Her main goal in life was to be a homemaker and raise her family.  Ruth enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

    Survivors include two daughters:  Eileen Rice, Lancaster; Marilyn (Roger) Hirsch, Dodgeville; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great grandchildren; one sister:  Joyce Brandes, Boscobel; and nieces and nephews.

     In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Victor in 1998; a daughter, Carolyn Gardner; two sons-in-law, Gerald Gardner and Claudie Rice Jr., one sister: Edith Mahoney; brothers: Milo, Vernon “Bud”, Kenneth, and Glen; and a grandson-in-law, Darryl Gallinger.

     Funeral services were held on Friday, February 1, 2008, at the Lancaster Care Center Chapel at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor David Arevalo officiating.  Burial was in Graceland Cemetery, Mineral Point.  Friends called on Friday, February 1, 2008, from 9:00 a.m. until time of services at the Lancaster Care Center Chapel. 


Joseph M. Moraski

     Joseph M. Moraski, age 66, of Cassville died on Wednesday, March 12, 2008, in Cassville.  He was born on October 13, 1941, in Kewanee, IL, the son of Joseph and Josephine (Shuster) Moraski.  He attended Kewanee High School and was a member of the graduating class of 1959.  Joe entered into the United State Army and served his country in Vietnam.  Upon his honorable discharge, he was employed with Illinois Power in Forestry for thirty-one years.  After his retirement, Joe relocated to the Cassville area where he enjoyed camping, fishing, dancing, singing and playing the guitar.  He was the kind of man who loved to help anyone he could.  He was a member of the River Valley Community Church and the VFW Post No. 7080 of Cassville.

     Survivors include his daughters, Sonia Moraski, Davenport; Rhonda Fuller, Bettendorf; two grandsons, Drake and AJ Fuller, Bettendorf; his special friend and companion, Pat Walsh, Cassville; his sisters, Joyce Flannery, Milan, IL; Jackie Gruszeczka, Moline, IL; his former wife, Sandy Moraski, Kewanee; and a great many friends.

     Joe was preceded in death by his parents.

John C. Moris

     John C. Moris, age 87, of Bloomington, died on Monday, September 28, 2009, at his home.  He was born on May 30, 1922, in Bloomington, the son of Peter and Eleanora (Crubel) Moris.  John enlisted in the United States Army in 1942 and served his country in Europe and was honorably discharged in January of 1946.  John was united in marriage to Carol C. Hampton on October 15, 1945, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington.  After their marriage, John worked as a carpenter at Walz Lumber in Glen Haven for many years.  He also worked as a self-employed carpenter and electrician.  After retiring, John purchased a hobby farm in Bloomington Township.  He loved going to auction sales and was a collector.  John was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington, the Knights of Columbus Council No. 4416, and Abraham-Hickok Wetmore American Legion Post No. 148 of Bloomington.  He and Carol also enjoyed dancing.

       John is survived by his wife of 64 years, Carol Moris, Bloomington; three sisters: Mathilda Yunk, Clara Mumm, and Eleanor Mumm, all of Cassville; two sisters-in-law: Florence Heberlein, Lancaster; Alma Moris, Mt. Hope; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

       He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers: Edward (Agnes) Moris, Jim (Mildred) Moris and Peter Moris; three brothers-in-law:  Gerald Yunk, Loren Mumm, and Walter Mumm.

       Funeral services were held on Thursday, October 1, 2009, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington with Father Bart Timmerman officiating.  Burial with military honors was in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bloomington.  Friends called on Wednesday, September 30, 2009, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a rosary at 4:00 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Bloomington and from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the church.


Mildred M. Moris

     Mildred M. Moris, age 82, of Glen Haven, died on Saturday, March 15, 2008, at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, rural Lancaster.  She was born on November 1, 1925, in Cassville Township, the daughter of Adam and Susie (Rauch) Mumm.  Mildred graduated from Cassville High School in 1943.  She graduated from Platteville Normal Teachers College in 1945 and taught in the Ramsey school house.  Mildred married James W. Moris in June 1949 at St. Charles Catholic Church in Cassville.  She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Glen Haven, a founding member of the Bloomington Homemakers Club and a Blake’s Prairie Fair Superintendent for many years.  She enjoyed keeping up with her family’s activities, and in her spare time she enjoyed china painting.

     Surviving are her children:  Mary Rose (John) Rush, Platteville; Jim (fiancé Deanna Dietrich) Moris, Cassville; Tony (Michelle) Moris, Eastman; seven grandchildren: Jon, Chris, and Becky Rush, Robert, Matthew, Halley, and Hunter Moris; her foster son, Tom (Kathy) Cramer and their children, Kyle and Amanda, St. Charles, MN; a brother, Ambrose (Gerry) Mumm, Cassville; two sisters: Irene Smith, Darlington; Bernice (Cecil) Anderson, Madison; two sisters-in-law: Germaine Mumm, Lancaster; Patricia Mumm, Cassville; and many nieces and nephews.

     She was preceded in death by her husband, her brothers, John, Vincent, Carl, Maurice, and Kenneth, her two sisters, Agnes Moris and Florence Kohlstedt.

     Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Glen Haven at 10:00 a.m. with Father John Norder officiating.  Burial was in Gockel Cemetery, Glen Haven Township.  Friends called from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, March 17, 2008 at Martin Funeral Home in Cassville.  Friends also called on Tuesday, March 18, 2008, from 9:00 a.m. until time of services at the church.


Ivan L. Morrow

     Ivan L. Morrow, age 78, of Mount Hope, died Saturday, June 13, 2009 at the University Hospitals in Madison.  He was born on February 24, 1931, in Little Grant Township, the son of Archie and Genevieve (Griswold) Morrow.  Ivan graduated from Lancaster High School.  On October 8, 1954, Ivan was united in marriage to Marian Muldoon at the Lancaster Congregational Church in Lancaster.  After their marriage, the couple purchased a farm in Little Grant Township, which they farmed for over fifty years.  Ivan enjoyed the farm life and dearly loved spending time with his family.

       Survivors include his children:  Jerry (Rosalee) Morrow; Jamie Morrow, all of Mt. Hope; six grandchildren:  Joey (Jody) Morrow, Jennifer (Dan) Cooley, Matthew, Justin, Blake and Jessica Morrow, all of Mt. Hope; seven great-grandsons: Austin, Aidan, Avery, Alec Morrow, Archibald, William and Samuel Cooley, all of Mt. Hope; his brothers and sisters: Ardis Kasper, Bettendorf, IA; Lyle Morrow, Lancaster; Phyllis (Burdette) Pagenkopf, Lancaster; Katherine (Francis) Pluemer, Livingston; numerous nieces and nephews.

       In addition to his parents, Ivan was preceded in death by his wife, Marian, a grandson, Lucas and his brothers and sisters:  Margie Ohlert, Myrna Starrett, Virgil Morrow, Leonard Morrow and Marilyn Rech.

Gregory R. Muller

Gregory R. Muller, age 66, of Cassville, passed away Sunday, August 7, 2011 in the company of family. Greg was born on March 25, 1945, in Dubuque , IA , the son of Alfred and Stella (Pluemer) Muller. Raised in Tennyson , WI , he grew up working at his father's garage, The Muller Garage. He attended Potosi High school , graduating with the class of 1963. After high school, Greg entered college at St. John's University in Collegeville , MN , where he received a B.S. in Chemistry in 1967. After completing college, he enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1967, where he served in numerous locations both in the U.S. and abroad. With more than 21 years of service, he retired from the Air Force in 1987 with the rank of Major. Following his retirement, he entered employment with McDonnell Douglas in CA in 1988 as an Aeronautical Engineer. He relocated to St. Louis , MO , where he worked for Boeing until he retired in 2010, to Gods country, Cassville WI . Greg loved spending time fishing and boating on the river, flying and watching the Packers.

Survivors include his children, Andrea (Kyle Hoff) Muller and Robert Muller; and a sister, Mary Ester (Bob) White.

In addition to his parents, Greg was preceded in death by his sisters, Bernita Catherine Gallagher, Rose Mary Ann Baumann, Dolores Mary Kennedy; and his brother, Norbert John Muller.

Funeral services were held at 11 am on Saturday, August, 13, 2011, at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Tennyson, with Father Richard Leffler officiating. Graveside Services with Military Honors was in St. Andrews Cemetery. Visitation was held from 4 -7 pm on Friday, August 12, at St. Andrews Catholic Church, and one hour prior to the service at church on Saturday. Martin Funeral Home in Potosi is serving his family.


Cindy M. Mumm

     Cindy M. Mumm, age 32, of Bloomington, died on Sunday, April 12, 2009, at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, IA.  She was born on December 24, 1976, in Lancaster, the daughter of Michael and Kathleen (Hampton) Mumm.  Cindy graduated from Bloomington High School in 1995.  She then attended Capri College of Cosmetology in Dubuque.  Cindy was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington and was a very active member of the Bloomington Sportsman’s Club.  She enjoyed fishing, trap shooting, and gourmet cooking.  Cindy dearly loved her nieces and nephews.

       Survivors include her parents, Mike (Kathy) Mumm, Glen Haven; one sister, Laura (Steve) Connelly, Lansing, IA; two brothers: Fred (Fiancé Kathy Hestetune) Mumm, Fennimore; A1C Ben Mumm, Shaw AFB, SC; her paternal grandmother, Dorothy Mumm, Bloomington; her maternal grandmother, Florence (Jack) Foster, Patch Grove; many aunts, uncles, cousins and nieces and nephews.

       Cindy was preceded in death by her grandfathers, Donald Mumm and James Hampton; and a cousin, Chloe Vogt.

Helen E. Mumm

Helen Elaine Mumm, age 64, of Patch Grove, passed away at her home on Tuesday, July 26, 2011.  She was born on October 30, 1946, in rural Cassville, the daughter of Lloyd and Stella (Nickel) Yager.

Upon graduating from Cassville High School in 1964, she worked at both the Potosi and Cassville newspapers before working at Okey’s Market for over twenty years, followed by more than five years at the Methodist Church in Bloomington.  Helen loved the outdoors, with mushroom hunting in the spring and growing her garden and flowers in the summer.  She treasured all her collections of recipes, chickadee figurines, John Wayne memorabilia, and orchids.  Helen was also very creative in writing dedications and would often write a poem to honor a significant event.

In January 1969, she married Dave Mumm in Cassville and they raised three children in Glen Haven.  Helen found great pride and joy in her family, planning annual family reunions and researching family history for over fifty years.  She was always willing to help anyone starting in genealogy or share her own findings on the family tree.   Helen thoroughly adored her grandchildren and was a firm believer in the motto of spoiling them before sending them home.

She will be missed dearly by her husband of forty-two years, Dave Mumm, Patch Grove; her children:  Todd (Stephanie) Mumm, Platteville; Shawn (Lori) Mumm, Cassville; Jackie (Mike) Rymarz, Prairie du Chien; grandchildren:  Jenna, Cheyenne, and Sierra Mumm, Jake and Josh Bolden; her brother, Larry Yager, Potosi; her sister, Janet (Bob) Pohle, Cassville; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by a brother, David A. Yager.

Funeral services were on Saturday, July 30, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Cassville with Reverend Jen Johnson officiating.  Burial will be at a later date in St. Mary’s Settlement Cemetery, Cassville.  Family and friends called on Friday, July 29, 2011, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Cassville and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home.


Elizabeth Lau Muntz

Elizabeth “Liz” E. Muntz (Lau), age 91, formerly of Cassville, died Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at the Guttenberg Care Center in Guttenberg , Iowa .  She was born on April 19, 1919 in Dubuque , Iowa , the daughter of Joseph and Katherine (Jellison) Maas .  Liz worked in the meat market, farmed with her husband, and owned the tavern, “Lost Night” in Cassville, retiring in 1999.  She liked to play bingo, watch westerns on television and loved to dance.

Liz is survived by six children:  Margie (Lyle) Smith, Dubuque, IA; Frank (Nellie) Muntz, Englewood, FL; Joan Nauman, Dubuque, IA; Dan (Rose) Muntz, Sedalia, MO; Betty (Ronnie) Gile, Dubuque, IA and Joe (Betty) Muntz, Guttenberg, IA; 35 grandchildren; 83 great-grandchildren; lots of great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mert Valentine, Lancaster; a daughter-in-law, Roberta Muntz, Lancaster; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Frank Muntz and Chris Lau; her son, Jake Muntz and her daughter, Florence (Tony) Zenz; a grandson, Billy Muntz; ten brothers and seven sisters.

Private Graveside services will be held at a later date at Cassville Cemetery, Cassville.  Martin Funeral Home in Cassville is serving the family.


Inez H. Myers

Inez H. Myers, age 94, of Glen Haven, passed away on Thursday, January 26, 2012, at her home. She was born on September 4, 1917, on the family farm in Glen Haven, the daughter of Frank and Ida (Vorwald) Koelker. Inez attended Muscallounge country school and St. Mary’s Catholic School. On November 6, 1935, she was united in marriage to Roy Myers at Galena, Illinois. After their marriage, the couple farmed near Glen Haven. Inez and Roy enjoyed dancing. They were the first couple to dance on the dance floor of the Checkerboard in Prairie du Chien. Roy and Inez also enjoyed attending horse sales. Inez enjoyed crocheting, sewing and cooking. She loved spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her children: Tim Myers, Glen Haven; Roy (Janice) Myers, Jr., Glen Haven; Karen (Robert) Harris, Prairie du Chien; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; three sisters-in-law: Hildegarde Myers, Marjorie Wilson and Mary Krause, all of Janesville; other relatives and many friends.

In addition to her parents, Inez was preceded in death by her husband, Roy on October 18, 1997, and three brothers and one sister.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 28, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at Martin Funeral Home in Bloomington with Father John Meinholz officiating. Burial was at a later date. Family and friends called on Saturday from 12:00 noon until time of services at the funeral home.


 Nell M. Myers

     Nell M. Myers, age 100, of Platteville, formerly of Glen Haven died Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at Our House Senior Living in Platteville.  She was born on July 23, 1908 in Glen Haven Township, the daughter of Myron and Lulu (Ryan) Myers.  Nell received a nursing degree in 1929 from the University of WisconsinMadison.

       Nell is survived by three nephews and one niece:  Myron “Bud” (Janet) Myers, Danville, IN, Mike (Colleen) Myers, Platteville, Grady (Linda) Chonister, Springfield, IL and Martha (Larry) Nagle, Grand Rapids, MN.

       She was preceded in death by her three siblings, Lucille, Alice Chronister and Myron A. Myers.

       Private family services were held at a later date.  Burial of her cremains were held in Blakes Prairie Cemetery, Town of Bloomington.  Martin Schwartz Funeral Home in Platteville/Bloomington is serving the family.


Roger A. Myers

     Roger A. Myers, age 65, of Lancaster, died on Friday, August 1, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque, Iowa.  He was born on October 24, 1942, in Lancaster, the son of Harley and Ruth (Brendemuehl) Myers.  On August 22, 1964, Roger married Mary Ann Kuenster at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster.  Roger was the owner of Myers TC Beverage and prior to that, the Arizona Saddlery and the Sand Bar Supper Club.  He was a member of St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster.

     Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann Myers of Lancaster; his children: Lisa (Gary) Keeney, Prairie du Chien; Chris (LeahAnn) Myers, Lancaster; eight grandchildren: Tyler, Trish, Samantha, Nate, Cody, Olivia, Tyler, and McKenna; two brothers: Jim Myers, Cedarburg and John (Kathy) Myers, Madison; mother-in-law, Betty Kuenster, Lancaster; two sisters-in-law, Peg Bublitz, Lancaster and Kristin Infield, Cassville.

     He was preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law, Doctor “Judy” Kuenster, his brother, Richard Myers, and a sister-in-law, Linda Myers.

     Funeral services were held on Tuesday, August 5, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster with Father William Seipp officiating.  Internment was private.  Friends called from 9:00 a.m. until time of services on Tuesday at the church. 


Warren Lee Myers

Warren L. Myers, age 89, of Beetown, died on Monday, September 12, 2011, at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, Lancaster. He was born on April 19, 1922, in Beetown Township, the son of Warren and Elsie (Wright) Myers. Warren graduated from Bloomington High School. On December 12, 1945, he was united in marriage to Marjorie Millin. After their marriage, Warren farmed in Beetown Township. He was later employed with the ASCS, retiring in the 1980’s. Warren was a talented musician and was a member of the Del Brown Band playing the trombone. He enjoyed shooting, hunting, fishing, boating, flying an airplane, which he flew solo at age sixteen, and collecting guns.

Survivors include his children: David Myers, Laura (David) Damm, and Lynn (Debra) Myers; six grandsons: Warren C. (Shona) Myers, James, and Robert Myers, Jason (Kerri) Damm, Matthew and Nathan Myers; three great-grandchildren: Brandon Myers, Ellie and Alyssa Damm; other relatives and many friends.

In addition to his parents, Warren was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters: Russell, Howard, Maude Kempthorne, and Monona Bartels.

Private family graveside services were held on Thursday, September 15, 2011, at Dodge Cemetery, Beetown Township, with Reverend Pamela Strakeljahn officiating. Family and Friends were invited to the Beetown Hall in Beetown on Thursday, September 15, 2011, at 1:30 p.m. Martin Funeral Home in Bloomington is assisting the family.


Mervin G. Myhre

Mervin G. “Merv” Myhre, age 78, of Bagley, died on Thursday, December 8, 2011, at Prairie Maison, Prairie du Chien. He was born on August 28, 1933, in Iowa City, IA, the son of Julian and Stella (Overhaug) Myhre. Merv attended school in Spring Grove, MN. He entered the United States Air Force and served his county during the Korean Conflict as a radio operator stationed in Alaska. In 1956, Merv was united in marriage to Treasure Brookens at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. After their marriage, the couple resided in Bloomington. Merv was employed at Hermsen Hardware in Bloomington for several years. He later was a manager for Skelgas and later Haskin’s Oil until his retirement. Merv was very active in the Bloomington and Bagley communities. He served on the fire department from 1963 until the present, served on the rescue squad from 1971 until 1975, and served as the secretary and treasurer for the Abraham Hickock Wetmore American Legion Post No. 148 of Bloomington. Merv loved to manage the Grass Motor Sales Softball team during the summer months. He also enjoyed bowling and socializing with the people of the Bloomington and Bagley communities. Merv was known best for his, “Stay out of trouble.”

Survivors include his wife, Treasure Myhre, Bagley; their children: Wayne (Michelle) Myhre, Bloomington; Scott (Pam) Myhre, Bagley; Sherry (Mike) Bartels, Avoca; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; his brothers: Gerald Myhre, Belmont; Jerome (Myrna) Myhre, Georgetown, TX; a sister, Virginia Howard, Whitehall; a brother-in-law, Herb (Charlotte) Brookens, Prairie du Chie; other relatives and many friends.

In addition to his parents, Merv was preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Ruth Ann Myhre; a brother-in-law, Milton Howard; and a niece, Julie.

Funeral services with military honors were held on Wednesday, December 14, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bloomington with Father John Meinholz officiating. Burial be at a later date. Family and friends called on Tuesday, December 13, 2011, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Martin Funeral Home in Bloomington and on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until time of services at the church. In lieu of plants and flowers, a Mervin G. Myhre Memorial Fund has been established to benefit local volunteer organizations.
