 Dr. Thomas Bailey Lundeen, age 78, of Platteville died  Monday, January 26, 2009 at his home. He was born on March 31, 1930 in Mediapolis, Iowa, the second son of Carl and Mary Elizabeth (Bailey) Lundeen. Graduating from the Mediapolis Schools, he later took Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from the  University of Iowa. Tom was a professor of history at the  University of Wisconsin Platteville for forty years. In 1968, he was elected the Outstanding Professor of the Year by University faculty and students and in 1995, he was honoured by the Teaching Excellence Award of the  College of Liberal Arts and Education. Tom was a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow at the  University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1975. As University historian, he researched and wrote on campus and regional history. Tom was a world traveler and guest taught in the 1970s and 1980s in  England. In 2003, the campus Little Theater was renamed the Thomas B. Lundeen Lecture Hall where he lectured for many years. He was also inducted into the  College of Liberal Arts and Education at  University of Wisconsin - Platteville on  October 14, 2005 and joined the  University of Iowas Presidents Club. Tom was active in many campus, state, national and international organizations, including the following: Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and past president of the same, Phi Alpha Theta Historical Society, Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, Delta Upsilon International Fraternity, Point of Beginning Tourism Commission Board of Directors, Wisconsin Shakespeare Festival Board of Directors, UW-Platteville Foundation Board of Directors, Wisconsin State Historical Society, Grant County Historical Society and past president of the same, Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters, a life member of the University of Iowa Alumni Association and the Old Gold Club, Pioneer Booster Club, Friends of Canterbury Cathedral in America, the Victorian Society, many historic preservation organizations and usher and lector at Trinity Episcopal Church in Platteville.

Tom is survived by his brother, Eugene Carl, Boulder, CO; six nieces and nephews; eleven grand-nieces and grand-nephews; his very special friends, Helen Brodbeck and Eric Schambow and many other dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lois Elizabeth Lundeen Miller,  Olds, Iowa in 1981 and grand-nephew, Sam Bohmann Lundeen, Boulder, CO in 1995.

A Memorial Service was held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Platteville with the Rev. Diane Markevitch officiating. Immediately following the service, a time of fellowship and luncheon was held at UW-Platteville,  Ullsvik Center, Velzy Commons; everyone was welcome to join us for this time of remembrance. The burial of cremains will be interred at Memorial Park Cemetery, Burlington,  Iowa at a later date. In lieu of flowers and plants, the family requests memorials be made to the UW-Platteville Foundation. The Martin Schwartz Funeral Home in Platteville is serving the family.
