Father Philip Krogman

GREEN LAKE/BLOOMINGTON - Father Philip Krogman, accepting the invitation as Simeon did (Luke 2:29), “Now Lord, you may dismiss your servant in peace…” died on March 1, 2018. He was born June 13, 1934, the son of Herman and Julia (Trumm) Krogman.
Father Krogman graduated from St. Mary’s School in Bloomington. Father Krogman entered the
Salvatorian Seminary, St. Nazianz, Wisconsin He then studied Philosophy and Theology at St. John
University, Collegeville, Minnesota, where he graduated with a B.S. He continued his studies at UW-Platteville where he earned a Master’s in Education Psychology. Father always provided for and supported his mentors: The Franciscan Sisters of Charity, The Salvatorian Fathers and Brothers and the Benedictines.
On May 28, 1960, he was ordained to the Priesthood by Bishop William P. O’Connor for the Diocese of Madison at St. Raphael Cathedral, Madison, Wisconsin. He was Associate (Parochial Vicar) at St. Raphael Cathedral in Madison, Associate at St. Mary’s in Platteville, Chaplain at the Newman Center at UW-Platteville, Pastor of Our Lady of Hope in Seymour Corners and St. Peter in Elk Grove, a Missionary with the Frontier Apostolate Missions in British Columbia, Pastor of St. Rose in Cuba City, Pastor of St. John the Baptist in Princeton, Pastor of St. Henry in Watertown, Pastor of St. Rose a second time, Pastor of Immaculate Conception in Kieler, Pastor of St. Paul in Evansville and Pastor of Our Lady of the Lake in Green Lake for 17 years. He retired on December 26, 2017, having been the oldest Pastor in the Diocese. When asked why he remained in active service for 57 years, he would quote from Alfred H. Deutsch: “Still full of sap, still green”.
At the time of his death, Fr. Krogman was Chaplain to the Fr. Fliss Council of the Knights of Columbus in Berlin, Chaplain of the Catholic Order of Foresters in Princeton, Chaplain at the Redgranite Corrections Institution in Redgranite and a member of the Wisconsin Harness Racing Association. He raced and co-owned Standard Bred horses for 20 years at the Wisconsin Fairs and the Chicago Circuit. He played “honest” golf until October of 2017, aggressive card games until near the end and took advantage of the beautiful lake area around Green Lake. Parish bulletins often included his limericks, essays, poetry and humor (always greatly enjoyed by his parishioners).
Father Philip Krogman was preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Julia, his brothers: Jim (Mary), Ernie, two infant brothers, Jerome and John Francis, his sister, Norma (Carl) Andrews, and niece Pat Schroeder.
He leaves behind two brothers: Paul (Nelda), Tom (Evie) and sister-in-law, Jean Krogman. He is also survived by 18 nieces and nephews and a large family of their children.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, March 5, 2018, at 12:00 noon at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 535 Congress Street in Bloomington. The Most Reverend Robert C. Morlino, Bishop of Madison, will celebrate the Holy Mass with Very Reverend John Meinholz as homilist. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bloomington. Family and friends may call on Sunday, March 4, 2018, from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. where a Prayer and Rosary Service will be prayed beginning at 2:00 p.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bloomington. Friends may also call on Monday from 11:00 a.m. until time of services at the church. Martin Schwartz Funeral Home & Crematory in Bloomington is entrusted with his services. Fr. Phil would prefer that any gifts or donations be made to St. Mary’s Parish in Bloomington.
