Cassville - Steven F. Retallick, age 73, of Waterloo Township, passed away on July 21, 2025. He was born on September 13, 1951, in Lancaster, Wisconsin, to Francis L. and Ila J. (Traupe) Retallick. On September 19, 1970, Steve married Jacquelyn J. (Wamsley) Retallick, beginning a partnership rooted in love, hard work, and family.
Steve lived the life of a farmer—one who didn’t seek fame or fortune but believed in the dignity of hard, honest work. He spent his life raising beef cattle, dairy, and everything in between, beginning his farming career on the family farm near Glen Haven, moving to Beetown, and ultimately settling in Waterloo Township, where he farmed for the last 4 decades. Whether it was plowing the fields, cutting hay, or simply watching the wildlife in the open pastures, Steve was always connected to the land. He knew the value of the work, the land, and the animals he cared for, working from dawn until dusk, year after year, with a sense of purpose that was clear to all who knew him.
Steve's dedication wasn’t limited to his own farm. He was a National Lifetime FFA member, proudly receiving the American Degree for his commitment to agriculture and the future of farming. As a Grant County Adult 4-H Leader, Steve dedicated himself to supporting the next generation of farmers, showing them not only how to work but what it meant to truly care for the land and the animals that sustain us. He didn't just teach; he led by example, always working tirelessly to ensure his family had what they needed.
Steve had a passion for cattle and sheep shows and loved watching cattle auctions. His love for farming wasn’t just a career—it was a calling. He took great pride in watching his children and grandchildren show livestock, excel in sports and academics, always in the stands cheering them on with a heart full of pride. Whether it was the thrill of the livestock ring or the excitement of a sporting event, Steve found joy in seeing his family grow.
Steve was a man who spoke with honesty and sincerity, and those who knew him appreciated his straightforward nature. He had a quiet strength, and when he shared his thoughts, it was clear he spoke from the heart. His children and grandchildren learned from his example—taught the value of a hard day’s work, the importance of integrity, and the power of dedication.
Steve is lovingly remembered by his five children: Michael (Dawn), Steven (Cindy), Renee (Chad) Wehrle, Sarah (Mike) Blume, and Benjamin (Sadie), and the mother of his children, Jackie Retallick. He was a proud grandfather to thirteen grandchildren and a great-grandchild: Danielle (Russell) Hubby and great-grandchild Isaiah Hubby, Alex Retallick; Makoy Retallick; Myles, Levi, Mandi, and Luke Wehrle; Halie Schwab and Jaxcyn McCartney; and Emily, Bradly, Brinly, and Buckly Retallick. Steve is also survived by his brother, Kevin (Keri) Retallick, and his sister, Pamela Hobson.
In accordance with Steve’s wishes, there will be no public visitation or funeral. A private family burial will take place at Dodge Cemetery. Martin Schwartz Funeral Homes and Crematory in Lancaster is assisting the family.
Steve leaves behind a legacy of hard work, integrity, and love. As Paul Harvey once said, “And on the eighth day, God looked down on His planned paradise and said, ‘I need a caretaker.’ So, God made a farmer.” Through Steve, God made a man who understood that responsibility, worked tirelessly at it, and passed it on to the generations that follow.
